How do you beat the AI L39 in the Air to Air instant mission?

Ok, so decided to try Air to Air against another L39C in the instant action, and found that it's damn tricky. I managed to arm my missiles and then proceeded to try and catch the other guy out in some kind of mistake. He seems to turn much better than I do, and even when I get on his tail and get a lock tone. I can't fire because Im pulling to many G's to keep up with the enemy L39...

So....any tips would really be welcome.

P.S.

Funny (true) story, after tangling with the AI for about 40 minutes, suddenly I see a black puff of exaust some, and the AI pilot bail out.

I choose the closest friendly airbase to land and exit the mission, and read in the debrief screen that the enemy experienced "engine failure". lol. Never happened to me against an AI before.

I faced the same problem - at least in this mission. We are circling each other quite close and the lock tone appears only in very high G-turns.

By watching the tracks in TacView I saw that if the lock tone appears I'm by far to close to my opponent - so regardless of the G - the missile wouldn't hit anyway.

So I tried different maneuvers to get some more distance - but now I never got a lock tone. At some point I simply shot as it "looked right"...and got my kill.

The relevant things were:

* be within missile range

* pointing slightly ahead of his nose

* be more or less behind him - just enough for the missile to "see" the exhaust

It helps to watch your fight in TacView and measure the distances to get a feeling when shooting is successful.

What do you mean by this? You shot without a tone lock?

I didn't know that was even possible. How do I shoot the missile without a tone lock? I just press and hold the "weapon release" key for 3 seconds or is there something else to it? How does the missile track the target without the seeker locking on to it?
