Hello everybody!

I'm Adriano from Rome (Italy) and after more than a decade after avoiding SAMs with Falcon 3 and my Amstrad 386sx I found this fantastic world of DCS and I can't wait to be airborne again!

I'd like to have a few hints about the best way to start

1) Better Going through Steam or direct purchase from the website? On Steam I can't see all the modules on sale on the DCS Store, why?

2) Is it worth to start directly with the Alpha version or is better to begin with 1.5 version?

3) Would you recommend a good to begin module or better to acquaint oneself with the default set

Thank you!

Ciao

1) Go through the offical website. More modules are available (alpha and beta stuff usually which always comes later or not at all on Steam) and they are cheaper. Another thing, you will be supporting the developers directly as Steam won't take its cut of the sale.

2) To install the Alpha you need to purchase the Nevada Map. The graphics are much better, but the requirements are also steeper. Currently there are no training missions and only one DLC campaign available for Nevada (For the F15C, which you also need to purchase) so start with version 1.5.

3) Depends on what you like to fly and the difficulty setting you desire. Some modules are easier to learn than others, others are easy to learn but hard to master. I would start with the FC3 module. F15C, Su27 and A10A all feature professional flight models, but simplified system management. They are great IMO for beginners and feature training missions as well as campaigns. They have no clickable cockpits but the FMs are superb. The Mig21 I also can't recommend high enough. If you like rotary wings and have the gear (pedals are a must) both the Huey and Mi8 are brilliant and are a ton of fun to learn and master. Both have pretty good campaigns too.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

regarding 2)

The current alpha version is DCS 2.0 and is meant to be the test bed of the new NTTR map (which you need to purchase). It will only run with NTTR, and vice versa. But eventually the current release version (1.5.2) will be upgraded to 2.0.

NTTR map is great, but just for starting out with DCS, it is not necessary. I would simply get DCS 1.5.2 and whenever you are familar with everything, you always can get NTTR and/or DCS 2.0 later as well.
