Figured I might as well start a thread.

 

Just made my first 3D part ever. We'll see how it turns out. Tail Hook Handle.

If your going to 3D print that, i would make it in 2 pieces, that way you dont have any cleanup after the printis done :)

How about splitting it in a Upper and a Lower Piece?

With a hole in the upper parts for fastening the lower part, that way you dont have a visible seam :)

True dat. I was however thinking about putting an LED inside to light up the word hook, because I -think- that is how it is on the actual plane, figured work on it would be easier if it was in half. If I find out it's not backlit or I give up on the idea :) I think I'll shoot for your way.

you could make the bottom piece hollow, and make space in the top for the LED to be pushed up.... if its going to be half transparent plastics... you can get it to diffuse, and the effect depends on how thick you make the infill :)

 

Of course if there is more than one LED, and they need to sit like the Gear handle in the A-10C, then its best to cut it in half :)

So... VR... I have been convinced. Going to make the switch in the near future. Kind of killed my original pit idea. Still going to make one, but geared to VR. I have been told that having an accurate sized pit frame around you while in VR adds to the experience greatly. So still going to build the frame but no longer concentrating on switch-for-switch. Just some of the ones you need easy access to and can reach blind for. DDI's, UFC, Landing gear, Wing Fold, Hook, A2A and A2G... etc. Spoke via email with the guys at dogfightboss.com and they are working on an 18 pit. For $350 I'm thinking I might go that way now.
