Saw an interesting video on a VIVE owner's Youtube Channel. He is 100% pro-Vive but tried the Rift.

For those who can't watch...

He tried DCS, Project Cars, and Lucky's Tale.

Screen Door Effect was much less noticeable on Rift. He tried DCS on his Vive and didn't have a good experience. Rift is a "wow, impressive experience in the Rift and feels like resolution is higher in the Rift. Things in the distance are sharp, clear, and the screen door felt nonexistent."

He goes on to say he wanted to be disappointed with the Rift, but he really wasn't. Especially in DCS, it just looks a lot better in his Rift vs Vive.

The sweet spot felt a lot bigger in the Rift. You just put the HMD on and it works and looks good. He "wanted it to suck, but it didn't".

He did say the FOV felt smaller on the Rift because you almost feel boxed in. The Vive makes you feel like you have a diver's mask on, the Rift has a boxed in feeling.

He says "Would I buy a Rift? No. I am a 100% Vive channel and want to support them".

"Put it this way, if you are a big DCS world fan. Oculus all day long. Not even going to debate it. If you want the seated experience, go straight for the Rift. It is black and white. However, now that I've used roomscale and walking/head movements/etc... it just comes down to your game preference."

"The Vive still wins. The resolution feels lower res and the games feel pixelated."

... So now July can't get here fast enough.

No doubt that's a great video for people looking for confirmation on their OR purchase. If it were such night & day, black& white and "wow" factor, it'd have showed up on sims reviews/impressions of both HMDs.

The guy has no idea what settings was being used, what setup it's been tried on nor even if SS was in effect.

Sharing hardware opinions on two screens while comparing it with different images, as neutral and unbiased as the guy is, is as rigorous of a review as comparing the Vive and the OR in Elite Dangerous.

I have been going back and forth about Vive vs Rift for months.

This is no where near the first time that "Rift is a better quality HMD, Vive roomscale is amazing" opinion has been voiced.

I understand you bought the Vive so you feel you need to defend it to also justify your purchase, but this opinion isn't an anomoly. I have read over and over Rift has less SDE and provides a clearer image. It is just something I thought I would share because it is another resounding "For a seated gameplay experience (DCS, Racing, Etc)... Rift provided a clearer and more comfortable experience. For Roomscale, Vive's tracking and controllers are amazing".

There are plenty of people asking "Which is better for DCS, Vive or Rift?" and I am sorry, but the majority of people who have tried both say the Rift is better for seated sim experience- Vive is better for roomscale. Most people here don't care about roomscale.

I still have both on pre-order. I am tempted to cancel my Vive pre-order, but I am still hesitant. But unless an overwhelming number of reviews come out that completely discredit the opinions like this video presents, I will stick with the Rift. I want a better DCS experience- which means I want the most comfortable HMD with the best image quality.

So please, if you have any actual reviews of "Vive HMD is better than Rift in DCS", please post them! Anecdotal experiences are great for people who are undecided on a platform. A pro-Vive user giving huge praise to Rift in DCS shouldn't be ignored. And likewise, if someone says the Vive provided a better experience then their Rift in DCS too- I would love to see that too! It will make it easier to decide which to buy.

We all want the best possible experience in DCS. If that is the Rift, so be it. If that is the Vive, so be it. I don't really care which one- I don't own either one yet. That's why I read all the reviews I can, especially if they are a Vive/Rift comparison that feature DCS specifically.

You're generalizing and using shortcuts. I can afford a Rift and keep both headsets if I wanted, money is not a problem. I advised people to buy Rifts rather than the Vive IRL as well as on this very forum , I don't feel the need to defend it and justify my purchase nor one piece of hardware over the other.

That being said, I agree with you, it's an opinion that is fairly widespread that the Rift is better for seated while the Vive is better for roomscale. I never said it was an exception. But look around in youtube, forums and reddit and you'll find just about the same amount of people that prefer the Vive while talking about seated experiences only, it's the internet, if you look for one side or the other, you'll find what you want to read. Most professional reviewers though also only talk roomscale with the Vive because it is its prominent feature and one that most defines it compared to the Rift as of today, to a point where they forget the Vive does seated just as well. You even see plenty of people now thinking the Vive cannot do seated games at all...

I've had the chance to try both lately and as far as I could tell they're pretty similar so imho you can cancel whatever pre-order you want and you'll still be left with a great VR headset for simming, Rift or Vive. If all you do is seated sims though and don't mind the Oculus policy VR tantrum then the Rift is, imho, the one to keep because it's cheaper. ;)

But I'm sorry, about that person's video, you can't do a comparison of the same hardware in a different environment, not even mention the environment similarities or differences and hope to grow fair conclusions from such a precarious experiment, the methodology is distored and will only result in an unbiased person reading biased results. Many Rift owners will love that video for sure and give him praise for it but don't take it as a fair assessment of both hardware's strength and weaknesses.

It's as if tech websites would benchmarks different GPUs using a different game or driver version for every different GPU. Readers wouldn't take it seriously. But for some reason, people are so entangled in one hardware being better than the other that it jumps on anyone's opinion like its gospel.

Personally for seated experiences I prefer the Vive. Whenever someone gets an HMD, Vive or Rift, I see him/her as a new VR pal to share experiences with, not as a Rift's competitor threatening my way of life so whatever you end up getting, share your opinions with us when you'll be blown away by the sense of presence! I assure you all these long hours spent reading, comparing and debating about every single feature or specs will seem far away.

Shogun, Rift does room scale just fine, it's just that the controllers aren't out yet and there's no real reason.

I cleared an entire room and set up rift for a week of room scale using some 'experiences' and games. It was cool but a bit underwhelming because after you step 2 meters either way you start to worry about the cord. It's not like you can run 5 meters for cover in a shooter.

Not sure what room scale will really ever be much good for until we have wireless HMDs and big space areas where you can move fast without boundaries.

That being said the Rift head tracking in room scale is superb even with one sensor and it is neat to be able to move around objects (eg The Rose and I).

I do a lot of standing stuff where a few steps either side of center are enough to make it immersive, beyond that you're restricted by the cord anyways.

Am working on a DCS standing experience video right now which is a lot of fun,

You're right to bring that up. Much like many reviewers tends to 'reduce' the Vive to Roomscale, many also forget to mention the Rift can already to standing just as well.

All valid points!

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

There are many people, or many people's significant others lol, who aren't too keen on purchasing both just to test out on one system and see which we prefer. All we can do is compare the various anecdotes out there and hope we make the best choice for us... which unfortunately, will have to be blind. Even if I wanted to test them out in a store- the nearest Best Buy and MS Stores near me that offer demos are 4 hours away. And even then, like you pointed out, it will be on unlike hardware, different games, etc.

Good point.

I think that is one thing I noticed about the Vive roomscale videos I have seen is the cabling. Maybe next-gen will offer some kind of wireless option.
