HUD symbology flickering when in special mode

When I have a target in STT while in vert scan/bore/etc the targeting info symbology just flickers until I unlock/cancel special mode, can anyone clarify what's going on there?

It's trying to Relock the target even tho it's outside of the Radar Search Cone
