Here’s a not so easy mission for all you A-10 fans. Although I haven’t flooded the area of operations with objects (so it should run smoothly) it’s as much a battle with arriving at way points on time and keeping an eye on the fuel gauge as it is to do with evading the enemy’s SAMs. Ctrl+A comes in useful as the target is at the limit of the A-10s range.

I’ve made a 2:35 min video with an outline of the mission:

But you might need the higher resolution version for reconnaissance purposes. It also contains some useful clues:

Here’s the mission:

BTW, I accidentally destroyed one of the prison huts in one of my test runs and I still got a mission successful rating.

Operation Jailbird

Autumn 1996. The Great War of Liberation has entered its 55th year. Russia has now regained the Crimea and most of the Krasnodar Administrative Region. American, British and German ground forces of the Western Allies’ CXVIII Corps are currently well established along a front south of the town of Novomihajlovskij (44 16 N 38 51 E).

The 7th Allied Tactical Air Force has deployed its A-10 aircraft to their Forward Operating Locations (FOLs) in the eastern Black Sea region. You have arrived in the conflict area with the 725th Fighter Squadron and you are leading a flight operating out of its FOL at Sochi-Adler Air Base.

Intelligence reports that General Jack D. Ripper is being held at the POW camp at Sudak Fortress. This evening at 17:02 Hrs 44th Marine Expeditionary Brigade CH-53 helicopters will attempt to rescue the General and other prisoners. You and your wingman must arrive just ahead of the helicopters and attack the enemy’s defences.

You are on the apron fully armed, fuelled and ready to go. Arrive at the IP (SP2) no later than 16:50 Hrs and attack the two gun positions on the north side of the fortress and the vehicle checkpoint at the main gate. Your objectives will be marked by laser. Do not drop ordnance on the huts in the POW camp.

The SA-15 equipped 1294th Air Defence Battalion is currently based nearby at Novyi Svet.

Remain overhead the fortress until the Marine helicopters have left the area.

A KC-10 tanker will be available at 17:24 Hrs altitude 15000 ft at (SP6).

Your call-sign: Colt 11

Weather is fine, 68 F with sky clear.

AWACS unavailable.

Home Plate: Khersones Air Base (SP8).

Emergency landing field: Gudauta Airport (SP9).

Mursi buckoo, BRD. J'ai compris tous!!

Somebody on the SimHQ forum saved himself some fuel by cruise climbing up to 25,000 ft - and then popped the 2S6 from on high. Never thought of that. I should have planted some high level SAMs in the mission.

Is the MEZ actually modelled in Lock On? It seems to be for the SA-15. Just as well, too.
