Has anyone played DCS with the Tobii eyetracker? Is it any good? Adequate substitute for TrackIR?

Tom (Tobii Eye Tracking)

Thanks for contacting us, It would be awesome to play games on large screen with Tobii Eye Tracker or other head tracking devices, Currently, 4C supports up to 30", using it on larger screen may cause accuracy dropped. some features such as infinite screen(extended view) which doesn't need pinpoint accuracy should work ok on screens slightly larger than 30" (less than 34"), but Aim at Gaze may have bad performance on it.

We do hope our eye tracker support screen as big as possible, but for 40" screens, it's not easy to archive that. mainly because the watching distance is too long to track eyes, current tracking distance is about 100cm(optimal distance is about 60~70cm), it's not long enough for 40" screens, unfortunately, at least in near future tracker supporting 40" screen won't be available.

I know there are many words misspelled on the letter I posted but I assure you that is the letter they sent me when I asked them about any future plans for supporting large screen formats (I had a 40 inch 1080 now I have a 50 inch 4K so I am even further away from using their product).

Tobii just uses a CPU-based face detection algorithm for 6dof head position. If you look at their product page for the 4C tracker, they point out that "head position does not use EyeChip." You can convince yourself of this by covering the off-axis IR emitters (far left and right of the 4c) while leaving the central camera uncovered. This will cause gaze vectors to fail, but you still get head position.

Therefore, I'd say, unless you really need gaze detection, you should be able to get a comparable experience out of eg: OpenTrack with the "FaceTrackNoIR" plugin (forget what it's called since I don't use it, but I know it's in there).
