BassAddict Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 (edited) While I understand the ship isn't moving and a strong wind has been added to help with this, the wind IMO is hurting more than its helping; let me explain. Since this is a training mission, many people will use it to help set a base line for trying to conform to a CASE I recovery pattern. This can also be done in the land based Landing Training Mission. The 20kt headwind makes this rather difficult for new pilots to accomplish. The crosswind turn is fine, but its the only turn that you can't feel the effects of the wind in full, because the aircraft is making all of its major configuration changes for landing. Now that we're on the downwind, we have to deal with a very strong tailwind which; 1)gives us less time to practice trimming for on speed AoA and 2)robs us of TAS, which causes us to correct with either more power or less DLC. Since we're pretty light on this training this isn't terrible either, but it's what happens next that really hurts the learning process. When you turn crosswind, you start to fly sideways due to your ground track being heavily affected by the wind. You now either need to remove the power that you added to compensate on the downwind, or add more DLC to help with lift gained by turning into the wind. The crabbing approach doesn't help build a proper sight picture when making CASE I approaches in normal conditions. What I suggest is one of two things; 1)Either change the mission to remove the wind and make the carrier mobile or 2)Add a new training mission with a moving carrier and no wind. Thanks if you made it this far. Cheers, -BassAddict Edited April 2, 2019 by IronMike [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Victory205 Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 That's the way the carrier pattern is flown. Whether there is natural wind or not, the effect is the same. It's a wash, other than if the ship is making it's "own wind", then the wind over the deck will be axial, making your lineup problems more difficult. Fly Pretty, anyone can Fly Safe.
