Hi everyone guys! Please can you tell me a tutorial (possibly .pdf format) that illustrates all the ways to correctly use the jdam bombs on the F-18. The tutorials on youtube confuse me and, in my opinion, they are not explanatory at all (especially for newbies). I understand that the F-18 is still in development but, when new features like Jdam become available, it would be ideal if there was also an update to the aircraft manual.

Thanks for your attention:)

There are no manuals or tutorials covering JDAMs besides Wag's videos at the moment. But if the confusion is in obtaining and entering the coordinates, try these posts:-

I also find JDAMs more accurate when released above 18000ft.

Attached is my checklist for using JDAM (based on Wags videos mainly). Note that there are a few things not working exactly right currently, so the make sure you check the forums here for current details. Hope this helps.

There's a very simple way of using JDAMs that I've not seen being covered yet - I've been using it to great effect bombing runways with the GBU-31V3s.

First off, equip 4 GBU-31V3s and then make four waypoints for where you want your bombs to hit (you can just use the DDMMSS for waypoints, it's accurate enough to hit runways, make sure to set the elevation - feet seem to work fine). Then takeoff and fly towards your target, go to AG mode, select the JDAMs on the stores page, set EFUZ to INST, change PP mode to TOO. On your HSI, select waypoint 1 and then press WPDSG - you should now see a diamond for the target and a counter (when you're within 10 mins of the target). Wait for your JDAMs to align (2.5mins), and then make your attack run. I've mapped the AMPCD OSB buttons for incrementing the waypoint by one and WPDSG, so that I can ripple the bombs off. I basically fly at the target, at around 20s to target I do a 30deg climb (most of my attack runs on airports are done on the deck, due to SAMs) and wait until I see in range, then pickle, increment the WP (to WP2), WPDSG, pickle and repeat that until all four bombs have been dropped.

Yep, the TOO waypoint method is easy. Just have to remember to set the waypoint elevation to target elevation or it will be in the floating in the air. PP coordinates method requires some understanding of coordinate formats and conversion and UFC entry. But I think in both methods you will need the terminal phase settings of bomb heading, angle and velocity. Or can they be left out in the TOO method?

Not necessary for TOO - never set them, and bombs all hit where I wanted.

Thanks, good to know :)

UPDATE: TERMinal profile entry is not necessary in both PP and TOO modes.

I am loving these JDAMS.

Dropping them through the thick cloud in fairly strong winds with 4 bombs on separate targets, across an airfield, in one pass.................is superb!

Wag's tutorials were fine.

Well here is a trk file. This is after I have done a complete reinstall of OB after having even more problems. Before the update I could drop four bombs with no problem. Clean install did not help.

JDAM MGRS to Lat/Long

ok 2 ways of dropping JDAM in the hornet ...1. placing waypoints for the hornet via the mission editor over targets or 2. manually inputting in coordinates ........through trial and error i've discovered a way to get pin point accuracy for Hornet JDAM for the time being .....as the hornet JDAM is still in development i hope the following helps you guys for better accuracy doing some conversions with coordinates.Firstly use the MGRS format in the mission editor to get a more detailed grid location of a target ...then we need to convert that MGRS format to a Degree, Minute, Second, 2 Digit Second Decimal format to give us coordinates such as this eg 41° 50' 40.47" N 41° 48' 53.24" E and input this converted info into the hornet.

go into the mission editor and write down the MGRS reference for the target....eg 37 T GG 33691 36351 now using a free convertor i will provide a link for we need to convert the MGRS grid format to a Degree, Minute, Second, 2 Digit Second Decimal grid format

link for the free convertor webpage http://www.legallandconverter.com/p50.html

3_MGRS_To_LAT_LONG_CONVERSION.png

type in the MGRS into the MGRS/USNG to latitude and Longitude calculator and press "Calc"

4_CONVERTED.png

the new Latitude & Longitude for the target will be 41° 50' 40.47" N 41° 48' 53.24" E

5.png

now we need to input this new data into the Hornet...as follows type in the N 41° 50' 40 then press enter once

then type in the last two numbers

6.png

press enter and you should see the Lat 41° 50' 40.47" N displayed in the DDI

7.png

repeat that cycle to enter all the converted grid ref

8.png

hope this helps

A question related to the actual RL jdam implementation, to hit the target accurately the pilot always has to inserts speed, heading, angle?

Sorry Chalky but I don't understand the need to convert the coordinates. In the DCS mission editor (caucasus map), pointing the mouse at the waypoint where the target is located, the coordinates are obtained in the format x ° y 'z "N ecc... Moreover, on the pad I cannot insert MGRS coordinates and I don't understand how we can see the MGRS format on the map (I only see the format x ° y 'z "N ecc...). Last night, after the last update, I tried to perform a simple bombardment mission with JDAM (GBU 31). I only tried the TOO mode (waypoint 1 right on the target). After running all the settings in flight, I discovered that the circle no longer appears around the target waypoint and, when the release timer reaches zero and the bomb is dropped, it does not hit the target (in fact it misses a lot). I believe there is still work to be done for the JDAM.

x° y' z" N... - there is not enough for accuracy. It is necessary with decimals of seconds!

Need x° y' z.zz" N

To the contrary...

TOO jdam mode do not work after the last update.

JDAM works much better in recent OB. TOO works fine for me.

What seems to be a problem for you? Attach trk file for ED to look at it.
