One of the things that I've noticed as a long time DCS mission builder is that the AI has only a limited sense of self preservation. They will often fight to the death, or at least until out of fuel. Rarely, I have seen AI in a disadvantageous situation try to run, but I'm not sure what triggers this. The lack of varied reaction isn't always a problem, but it does tend to make things feel 1 dimensional at times. It also sticks out if you're making a missions where one side has considerably more resources than the other. Wouldn't the disadvantaged side try not to waste aircraft?

I think it would benefit the sim if AI could be instructed to preserve themselves to different degrees. Let's say the AI has a parameter "preservation level" with level 0 being as it is today, they fight to the death. Level 1 might be that they try to escape when they hit bingo fuel. Level 2, they avoid getting into dogfights, BVR only. Level 3 would have them perhaps only shoot to prevent enemies from getting close. Maybe level 4 would have them run from anything that gets within a certain distance.

These parameters could also be helpful in creating different tactics. One of which that I like to implement in my missions is hit and run, where high speed interceptors with long ranged weapons (MiG-25, MiG-31, F-14) try to make a single high speed pass with their weapons and then immediately run. It takes a little bit of work to do in the current state of DCS and it might not always work. I could perhaps use preservation level 3 to make these interceptors perform as I intend easily.

I know AI improvements are in the works, would it be possible to include options like this if they're not under consideration already?
