epokha Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Hi all, I'm about to drop some serious money on a new GPU, probably a 2080 super when they come out. I'm planning on keeping my 2600X overclocked until the next generation of ryzen processors come out. I want to upgrade to 32GB of RAM and this will require a new X470 mobo for the extra RAM slots. I'm currently running 2x8GB of Corsair Vengence LPX CMK16GX4M2B3200C16. I can get another couple of sticks for 140 AUD. 16-18-18-36, 1.35v, XMP 2.0, unbuffered I can upgrade to something like G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-3600C16D-16GVK 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 G.Skill Ripjaws V Series F4-3600C16D-16GVK 16GB (2x8GB) 3600MHz DDR4, 1.35v, unbuffered 16-16-16-36 for $309 AUD Is it worth me shelling out for 3600mhz? and selling the old RAM? Or just grabbing another 2x8GB of what I have already? Would I see any difference in performance in DCS? Does the next gen of Ryzen processors benefit from 3600 DDR 4? David OC Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 (edited) I just upgraded from 16GB 3466 mhz ram (2 x 8GB) To 32GB 3000 mhz (2 x 16GB) See no real difference in performance, more stable in large MP servers. Many have said not to mix ram sticks. They are tested in packs. Also, some have said it's better to go 2 x sticks (pair), then 4 x sticks. Not sure what's the best ram for AMD tho, someone here will know. EDIT: Check your prices here, this is where I get my parts in Aus. https://www.msy.com.au/waonline/243-desktop-ram?orderby=price&orderway=desc Edited July 2, 2019 by David OC i7-7700K OC @ 5Ghz | ASUS IX Hero MB | ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX | 32GB Corsair 3000Mhz | Corsair H100i V2 Radiator | Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe 500G SSD | Samsung 850 EVO 500G SSD | Corsair HX850i Platinum 850W | Oculus Rift | ASUS PG278Q 27-inch, 2560 x 1440, G-SYNC, 144Hz, 1ms | VKB Gunfighter Pro Chuck's DCS Tutorial Library Download PDF Tutorial guides to help get up to speed with aircraft quickly and also great for taking a good look at the aircraft available for DCS before purchasing. Weta43 Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 We use HP Z840 workstations for modelling at work. 2 x 22 core Xeon 6152 processors (88 virtual cores), HP Z Turbo Drive PCIe SSD and 256 GB of RAM. We tested different configurations of RAM, and for our needs at least, found filling all the slots gave better performance for the same amount of RAM than filling half the slots. Cheers.
DeltaMike Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Maybe not as big a deal as it used to be but probably worth checking the Mobo manufacturer website to see what will actually run at the rated speed Ryzen 5600X (stock), GBX570, 32Gb RAM, AMD 6900XT (reference), G2, WInwing Orion HOTAS, T-flight rudder
SVgamer72 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 You can search around the Web, but for Ryzen once you get to 3200 with tight timings, you get diminishing returns at higher RAM speeds. Basically it is not worth spending a lot more to go from 3200 to 3600 (assuming you can successfully run that speed with your CPU/MB combo). Here is a link where someone did some testing in games at various RAM speeds. https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/ryzen-vs-ram-2133mhz-vs-2400mhz-vs-3200mhz-vs-3600mhz-with-tweaked-timings-2560-x-1440-ultra-setting.424947/

Worrazen Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Keep in mind the more memory you have the less speed you will usually be able to run it at. But for DCS, primarily it's the amount, so I wouldn't worry about it, but forget about XMP IMO. Modules: A-10C I/II, F/A-18C, Mig-21Bis, M-2000C, AJS-37, Spitfire LF Mk.
