Banzaiib Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 In the image above you can see pings to most of my favorite servers highlighted in red. Most of them are NA servers, as I'm in the southestern part of the US. The issue I'm having is that my actual ping to most of these servers is closer to 50 - 80 ms when I'm in them flying around, but in the server list they're often over 500 ms. It should also be noted, that the NA TAW servers have grossly different ping times, but they're all the same physical server... you'd think they'd have the same ping time, or at least very similar. Also, turning on my VPN yields a more normalized ping list. Usually, in most games, turning on my VPN adds a little bit to ping times, but in this case, it reduces them dramatically. I have no idea why this happens... maybe my ISP doesn't like the master server? VPN ON server list below:
Wolve03 Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 I noticed that the ping from the servers is the latency calculated off a UDP packet sent to that server. When they are sent in masse, I guess that there's a sudden spike in the network traffic (and perhaps a bit of loss?) and we see higher latency. When we check our ping again, it does the same process. Instead, it may have been better if we could simply re-check our own latency against the selected server later (re-check latency) The VPN bit is odd yes. But that could be possible if the routing at the ISP is especially bad.
