Hi,

I was flying against 3 x Su-27 last night. They were set up to perform CAP and patrol for 2 hours.

I took off and started looking for them.

They were around 25000 ft, as was I.

I was in RWS mode set out to 80 NM.

As I got closer, they started appearing on RWR. I narrowed the gates on the RADAR and continued looking.

Nothing at 60 NM...nothing at 50 NM...nothing at 40 NM...

By now I was getting worried. They'd seen me and started locking me up.

I switched to TWS and with that, I had 3 contacts nose-hot closing at 1000 kts on the RADAR.

Why could TWS see them instantly but RWS was blind????

My understanding is RWS has GREATER detection range? If they can be tracked in TWS, RWS must definitely be able to see and paint them, otherwise TWS would not have sufficient data to function.

The JF-17 is not better than the F-16; it's different. It's how you fly that counts.

Hmm. Just read a thread about oddities with RADAR and RWR targets...

I think something is buggy with RWS mode, too.
