Please tell me this is possible..... AI Wingman Orders

I created a quick test mission, just me and the AI wingman. I wanted to give AI an order to fire illumination rockets over ground targets but there was nothing in the communication menu RAlt+\ to issue the AI such order.

 

Do I need to change the options in the mission editor?

You can make most things "happen" with the editor.

 

Here is a mission example with illumination over 3 zones. It will keep launching them each time you press them.

 

Use the radio other menu to issue these orders, you can rename this to make it look like it's to the wing man etc.

Is there anyway I can make my AI wingman actually fire the illuminating rockets instead of the bomb falling from the sky?

No.

 

I could go on to talk about how terrible helicopter AI is in general but that doesn't help with anything.

 

There might be a way for planes to drop illumination flares, but then you might as well stick to the illumination script and pretend it's some 'off screen' artillery or something.

Agreed.

Getting a plane to drop their illumination bombs is a little tricky and requires a bit of back and forth to make it happen reliably. Illumination rockets from helicopters are close to a lost cause, sadly.
