What are those prism looking things on the sides of the HUD? You can clearly see them in these pictures:

The Ka-50 has them too. Sometimes they look like prisms that stick out, sometimes like windows. What do they do?

. . . if you mean the two little black blocks with the window on the front, either side of the base of the HUD . . . they're part of the helmet aiming system fitted to all three aircraft.

 

If it's something else, you'll have to circle it ;)

 

Nope, thats it. To my eye they look like prisms sometimes because they seem to stick out of the block and they sometimes look triangular.

 

So those are the things that track the schlemm! Kinda low compared to the pilot's head though, aren't they?
