The clouds do not reflect and diffuse light properly. Clouds do not appear dark at the bases unless they are at least 4000 feet thick. Clouds do not produce deep shadows on the ground unless they are at least 4000 feet thick for the same reason. Sunlight penetrates completely through clouds of less thickness, producing a diffused light effect resulting in bright white clouds and diffused light, softening or eliminating cloud shadows
