xmudroller Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Lt. Col. Mike "Vago" Hilkert, a pilot with the 303rd Fighter Squadron, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross last month for heroism during what has been described as "one of the most intense combat rescue missions of the Afghanistan war." Ten years ago, just read it on yahoo news 5 minutes ago.
xmudroller Posted November 17, 2021 Author Posted November 17, 2021 This A-10 pilot repeatedly drew fire away from rescue helicopters during an intense firefight 10 years ago. He finally received an award for it. 1
King39 Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 I remember we got an Intel briefing on this just after it occurred. It happened just after I got back from my last Afghanland deployment and used the Pedro Pave Hawks we flew in from Kandahar. It sounded pretty intense esp. for the PJ's on the ground. https://news.yahoo.com/10-pilot-repeatedly-drew-fire-222930478.html?guccounter=1 It's pretty pathetic that it took ten years for the Pentagon bureaucracy to upgrade it to the DFC.
