Hello all!

Regarding the following helicopter comparison webpage, I have some questions left.

- Why is the Ka-50 the heaviest of all compared helicopters?

Because it is. Not sure how else to answer that. It has a lot of power, so they were able to add a lot more armor etc.

- Why is there no AA-11 available in the game?

Because the real Ka-50 doesn't use it.

Here's the link:

Yeah, they even list AGM-122 for the Apache which is amusing, given that the AGM-122 had a very short-lived production run and was never, ever used on a helicopter, at least to my knowledge.

I see. It's listing maybe testing loadouts or so?!

Maybe the helicopters were tested with these systems but these configurations never saw active duty.

Is that what you say?

What about the Ka-50 armour?

In the list, except the Ka-50, al other helicopters are two seaters, so I would think the two seaters should have had more armour than the Ka-50.

Or is there any information if thicker armour plates were used, or so?

JDSkis's point about the coaxial rotor system might have some weight can be true also. I forgot that.

Development of a given vehicle doesn't need to follow common sense - common sense is not necessarily applicable to these things anyway :)

I don't know if helis were ever even tested with AGM-122 ... I know they were tested with AIM-9, and I think Ka-50 was tested with R-73, although those were never deployed operationally and in fact the capability may not exist in production helis.

Yes, you're right.

I think they fit and test the helicopter with a lit of weapon systems, first to gather data for further projects, and second, because they want to sell their product and want to provide more possible configurations to make it more attractive for potential customers.

Maybe.

On one hand yes. On the other, if you take AGM-122 for example, it was an interesting idea to use those vs. say Strela/Shilka/Tunguska type targets since they are fire and forger.

However the AGM-122 proved to be very limited as an ARM for example.

For AAMs, the reason is different - they sure work, but they tend to suck up carrying capacity for A2G weapons - your primary, secondary and tertiary mission as a helicopter.

While heli-heli and plane-heli engagements have occured, they are very very rare.

I found this page, which also lists several missles as Air-to-Air for the Ka-50.

The Kamov Ka-50

Why are so many things listed as Air-to-Air if it never uses it, and why is there a "mode" for the helicopter to act under Air-to-Air in the weapons selection modes?

What IS used for Air-to-Air? Did they just make the mode in the helicopter and waste time/space/etc.? I don't want spoilers, but someone had a thread about Air-to-Air that said possible spoiler, so I skipped reading it, but I wonder what it was about now.

I seem to remember a few Air-to-Air on the wingtips of my old Gunship game, was that completely "Arcade"-ed up for fun? I can remember a few times blasting away other choppers in flight while vacating areas and they blocked my path. I thought I remembered it being an actual simulation...the manual was a beast!

Me confused!?!

Let me say this again:

ED gets their data from Kamov, and Russian Army Aviation.

The Ka-50 DOES NOT USE AAMs. In the event of a necessary air to air missile engagement, the Vikhr is used.

The why has been talked about in this and other threads. Do a search.

In a real battle, my guess is, that there were other units involved and some that's task would be to intercept enemy aircrafts.

I think it would be fighter aircraft, while, as Tharos already said, the main task of helicopters it A2G

I would like to have a Kamov bumper sticker. Can you please ask them to send me one? :v:
