EtherealN Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Could you give a run-down of your computer's hardware and software, so we can rule that out as a cause? The more detail the better. Also, have you tried installing on a different machine using the same downloaded files? swingline43 Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 (edited) Thank you for responding! Vista 32 bit/UAC is turned off Q9450 Quad Core 2.66ghz 12mb cache Nvidia GTX 280 1024mb 4GB Corsair Ram @800mhz Sound Blaster Extreme 750GB Sata Drive I've paid for the software and have a license key but no place to activate yet, I'm assuming you activate after you install. I download and run the exe and get an error because the cab is not there. I download the cab and try to install and that does not work. I've even tried installing the cab first into the folder and then running the install again. I'm confused because the exe has an installer and the cab does not it must be extracted... correct? Look forward to hearing back. Thanks swing Edited February 25, 2009 by swingline43
Bravo020 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Step 1. Verify the md5's of each file that you have downloaded to make sure that they have been downloaded without error. Not sure what Vista tools are available to generate an md5 hash, but a quick search in google should find you the necessary application to generate an md5 hash. Step 2. After verifying that the md5 for the first file "setup.exe" is correct, and that the md5 for the second file "data1.cab" is correct make sure that both files are named correctly (I seem to recall that when I downloaded the data1.cab file it got renamed somewhere along the way....). Step 3. With both the files setup.exe and data1.cab in the same folder somewhere on your PC (desktop or where-ever), launch setup.exe and follow the installation instructions. Do you still get an error at this point?
swingline43 Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 (edited) So I should download and save both the exe and cab to a file on my desktop for example and then run from there? The exe has an installer the cab does not, how does that work? I assume I have to extract the cab after the exe installs? Thx swing P.S. I will not be able to try again until tomorrow morning EST time... I will do a fresh down load of the exe and cab files to a file on my desktop and run from there...... I will check this forum several times a day until we are both flying............... :-) Edited February 25, 2009 by swingline43
EtherealN Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 No, the setup.exe opens the .cab. You can think of the cab file like a zip archive that the setup file uses to get the files it needs to install on your computer. As long as both are in the same directory and both are good (check md5 hashes as mentioned) you then start the setup.exe (as administrator). If all looks good but it fails there, try moving both files after verifying that their names are correct (some downloads can change their names if there is already something with an identical name in the destination directory, without asking about it) to C:\. Start setup.exe again there. (This is due to some systems causing some shenanigans when there are long file paths, which desktop could be, though this is a rare problem. Would be good to rule it out though.) swingline43 Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 (edited) Fixed!!!!! Installed!!!!!!! Thanks for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got it running. I think the problem was that with Vista you need to launch the .exe in Administrator mode. Thanks again to everyone that responded to my post. Now we have to get Dunkjt flying....... swing Edited February 26, 2009 by swingline43
