Synchronising switch states physically with in game on start

All, I know this has been discussed before - there is a way of getting the game to quickly check where all the physical switches are on start (I think it was called polling?) so that when you are starting up all the devices and in game match. I looked for it but wasn't able to find it, can you link it for me?
