"Real" quite often doesn't match "Reality". Sorry for those who might thing for a while they got a "real" F-14A from a top secret "Area 51" junkyard. Ockham razor principle says:  All things being equal, the simplest explanation is usually the most likely. In Hollywood "reality" CGI is the "real" thing. 30 years later some people are still doing "risky business", aren't they?

Breaking news: A movie uses CGI for a plane. Nobody ever claimed that the Maverick's Tomcat actually flew, seeing as they didn't have cooperation from the Iranian government (although if I was an IRIAF officer, I'd be jumping at the chance to lend them one, frosty international relations be damned). US Tomcats are all out of service, and due to Iranians operating them, any effort to preserve one in flying condition would be dead on arrival, even if they weren't too worn out to fly safely (a common fate of Navy aircraft).

FYI, apparently the Tomcat they used was this one, though I'm not sure how credible this site is:

Apparently, they found the engineless remains in San Diego and restored it enough so that the canopy would open. It was real in that sense.
