Mike Force Team Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Hello, Heatblur, Will the F-4 model Pilot Induced Oscillation Damage? I know that bent landing gear might appear after a pilot makes a hard landing due to PIO. Will the jet's airframe represent damage like bent sheet metal, damaged/destroyed radar nose cones, or damaged windshields? Mike Force Team
=475FG= Dawger Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Visibly bent metal after a hard landing would probably write off the jet, especially a built to crash on every landing Navy jet.

Dragon1-1 Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 It's a problem on every aircraft that didn't start life as a Navy jet. That said, I haven't had trouble with PIO on landing, even early in my flying days. If you're slamming the bird down so hard that things start to break, you're probably doing it wrong, so to speak. PIO is really a pilot problem, not anything that has to do with the jet, unless it's an experimental prototype with controls tuning WIP. That doesn't apply to our Phantom, though. In fact, I'm pretty sure the landing gear will break before anything else does.
=475FG= Dawger Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 I would think the only way to really damage an F-4 while landing it is getting very sideways since that would be the most vulnerable angle.
badger7966 Posted February 19, 2024 Posted February 19, 2024 Oh come on dude..Im 40 years a aircraft structural engineer...bent metal is never good and requires immediate attention and rectification.... it is designed to flex, not bend. 1

It would help to know what post you are addressing. I don’t see anyone saying bent metal is good in any case. Edited February 19, 2024 by =475FG= Dawger
Tiger-II Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 PIO is a pilot problem. If you start to experience PIO, let go of the controls, and go-around. 1 Motorola 68000 | 1 Mb | Debug port "When performing a forced landing, fly the aircraft as far into the crash as possible." - Bob Hoover. The JF-17 is not better than the F-16; it's different. It's how you fly that counts. "An average aircraft with a skilled pilot, will out-perform the superior aircraft with an average pilot."
