Possible radar render artifacts - vertical lines and strips

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm noticing that the radar sometimes only renders random vertical strips during a sweep, or even just vertical lines and no useful picture. This can happen whether it's Jester as WSO, or if I've switched to the back seat to try different settings.

With an air start I see this pattern: a normal radar picture for a couple of sweeps, then Jester sets the gain too high for a sweep or two, then it's mostly black with bright vertical lines. There are possibly more lines when facing towards contacts (MiG-21s in this screenshot).

I suspect this may be a bug (I don't remember it happening so much before the last patch), but maybe it's some real phenomenon (jamming 21s?? or hostile radars) I'm not accounting for.

Not using the WIP radar special options (but the HB UI 30Hz mode is enabled).

A repair (or perhaps just restarting DCS) has improved the issue - it's barely happening in the first track now. The radar is useable for BVR again. The behaviour can still be seen in the second track though (at least for me).

I’m experiencing the same issue. I usually play on MT, and those artifacts make it almost impossible to use the radar. Switching to ST does reduce the artifacts, but they are still annoying. Found this bug report because it's been a week with this issue and I'm starting to get frustrated but I see that no one has responded or mentioned a fix for this yet...

What is current situation with this topic?  Now my Jester cant find any targets, scope is filled with vertical lines most of time.

The topic of this thread has not been addressed for this patch. But there are several other radar improvements, especially related to Jester.

When you say he can not find targets, could you try to reproduce the issue in a quick SP track and hand that in? That would help us a lot to improve him further.

Thanks. This is a tricky one, I am having a very hard time finding the target with the radar myself here as well. It is not really a "Jester issue" and more that this is a really difficult situation to pick up that small Mig-21 coming straight ahead and masking itself behind the terrain in a slight look-down attitude.

I can see the return pop up occassionally for one sweep but then vanish again on the very next sweep. Even if I fine-tune the antenna angle and gain manually, the target usually vanishes immediately again.

It is a bit better after telling Jester to change the display to 25 nm NARROW (Jester Wheel > Radar > Scan Type), but still very difficult. The target can then be spotted fairly well manually at around 6 nm. Jester spots it a second later at around 5 nm.

The best I was able to achieve in this situation by operating the radar manually was spotting it at 12 nm with 25 nm NARROW and descending a bit. Jester found it himself at 10 nm then, after he tweaked the gain a bit to make the target appear for longer than one sweep.

I looked at my replay and now Jester found the target, he couldn't find anything when I did that track. I switch the radar to performance mode (wip) and get rid of those vertical lines, now the radar is usable for me

I seem to have this issue as well.  Radar is basically unusable oftentimes, and a lot of the time i just see vertical lines.

Tested it to make sure in an empty map where i was the only entity.

The interesting thing is that this only seems to happen in VR for me.

I tried flying without VR, and radar seems to work normally.  Additionally, when i created a track file in VR with the issue present for most of the flight, playing it back outside VR the issue doesn't show.

I have the same experience in VR - I run QuadViews for performance reasons so will try it withh this turned off to see if that makes any difference
