Updater/Repair not working: JSON error: lexical error: invalid char in json text.

Since the last update I'm getting this message,"JSON error: lexical error: invalid char in json text." and I cannot do a repair. If I delete the autoupdate.cfg file I then get an error message saying that that file is missing. Keen not to have to reinstall!
