repsol Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Hello ! A tactical question ? How high above ground level is usually ok to climb when hovering or moving slow when you have reached the maximum stand of range to expected enemy air defences ? I understand that this will depend on what weapon systems the enemy is belived to have but as a general rule ? If you can't locate any targets when hovering close to the ground should you increase the altitude to 100m ?, 300m ?, 500m ?, 1500m above ground level to try and locate targets or is it better to move forward to say a hill or a building up ahead that will provide cover and initiate a hover behing that... I have learned to fly this machine good enough now i think to do some fighting but my knowledge of battle tactics is somewhat limited :pilotfly:. Any advice would be appriciated...Thanks !
Panzertard Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 (edited) Here a guideline - check a bit further down on the page for the "10 rules to live by" http://kriegsimulation.blogspot.com/search/label/DCS%20Black%20Shark or the rules 4-10 specificly: http://kriegsimulation.blogspot.com/2009/05/dcs-black-shark-tactics-primer-part-2_21.html Rule #5 will tell you start at the lowest possible position and climb slowly until you reach an altitude where you can see the full area. Rule #10 will tell you to take it slowly, you should maintain a pace that you can kill targets faster than you can detect them. Going any higher than necesarry may be suicide - there may be SAM batteries out there ... Edited June 19, 2009 by Panzertard The mind is like a parachute. Chelco Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 (edited) Ey Panzertard, Thanks for the reference to my blog. Please be advised that the 10 rules I mention there are just paraphrasing what the simulation guides guru Richard Sheffield wrote in "Gunship Academy". Specifically, chapter 7. I just re-phrased it and added some pictures. Unfortunately, the blogspot format sucks big time. I promise I will consolidate or add some navigation aid so people don't have to scroll down so much. Another thing, please take into account the enemy. Low-tech enemies armed only with MANPADs require actually less hover and more altitude. Panzertard Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I was made aware of your fine blog by another chap I flew together with at the 159th server. Some good articles you had there, quite a nice read :) And since you had meantioned the author already I just reffered to your articles. Keep up the interesting trend you got going over there. :) The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning
