I've noticed that I only pick up contacts on AA radar when they are around 40nm or closer, I am unable to detect targets at 60. 70 etc. nm. meanwhile, if I try same with f18, it detects target at those distances. is it expected behavior?

The JF does not have the best radar. The target, aspect, and radar settings also play a part:

Yes. When you are searching for large aircraft such as KC135, your detectable distance is about 70 nautical miles. When you are searching for heavy fighters such as F14 15E, if the conditions are good, you can find them at about 50 nautical miles. If it is F16 18, it is about 40 nautical miles. On paper, the JF17 radar doesn't have as far a range as the F18 16. But since your missiles can't reach that far, it doesn't matter much. And within the effective range, its operation convenience and response speed are better than the F18 16.
