mondo Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago Could we get a feature like that in the Tomcat where you can use head tracking to direct jester to point the radar? I can get visuals.on targets from below and away from any background noise and the poor guy just can't seem to even see planes half the time. By the time I've managed to get him to move the radar I've gone passed the point of needing him. 1
Ivandrov Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago Use his Boresight mode for that. You can point at the visual contact with your pipper and he'll come straight up on radar most of the time.

Your aircraft positioning determines the picture quality. If they dont appear on screen then your position isnt good enough. That said, a more clever "look here" thing is planned. As Ivandrov said, the F4 features "pilot assisted" radar modes, you should make use of them. Boresight mode lets you lock something by putting pipper on it visually, that sounds like what you need.
Dragon1-1 Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Also keep in mind that Jester can't see a damn thing in the forward quarter, and his ability to check six isn't that great. He can see real good at three and at nine o'clock, but not a lot beside. So if you try to manually point him at a target in your forward hemisphere, he'll never be able to see what you're pointing at.

Yeah, a look here is what I need. All too often I can get aircraft 10 miles in front with zero background but clear sky and the guy can't see anything. I'm aware of things like boresight mode but this is for visual targets outside of that range. 11 hours ago, Ivandrov said: Use his Boresight mode for that. I'm aware of the various radar modes and uses but this is to simply tell jester to point the radar to a location, the same as I would say to a real WSO without having to go through a series of menus. With a real WSO would can say to them "point the radar 1 o'clock angles 21" or similar. With jester I have to navigate menus and all that's involved in those.

That's not really a thing in the F4.All the WSO can do is roughly changing the altitude (but Jester is already really good at that and you have options to further fine tune that in the Jester Wheel already) and adjusting the gain knob "at random".Even if you know precisely where the bandit is the pilots positioning plays a higher role in getting the target on screen than what the WSO can do.In the F14 its different. Take any of your encounters where you are struggling to get something on screen and fly that with a real WSO, you will see it wont work much better. You can get a lot more out of it by improving your positioning.Boresight works well for roughly up to 10nm, not just 5nm btw.

I'll record a track next time I can be essentially I'm flying a climbing intercept course towards 4 Mig 21s on the Afghanistan map, they are 30k ft and on a 45 degree course diagonally across my flight path. There's nothing behind them and the sun isnt a factor. Im nose onto them from outside the radars range until they are on top of me. I can see the Migs on the radar myself once they are within about 25 miles but jester is seemingly unable to see them. I can however hit them using the boresight but that's not the issue.

(While ofc not being too good to pick them up within clutter where humans couldnt see it either)
