About That VMF-213/124 F4U-1D Livery...

 

VMF-213 F4U-1D&Japan captured F4U Corsair

VBF-83 -CV-9Essex- 1945

 

Air Group 4/USS Essex (CV-9)/01JAN45.   (followed by CVG-83 in March)

Debutante ball in the U-bird's naval career.

First F4U's (combat deployed) on a carrier, as well as the first Marine Air Units combat deployed aboard.

 

First quarter of 1945:

 Operations -

GRATITUDE (South China Sea)

JAMBOREE (Tokyo Raids)

DETACHMENT (Iwo Jima)

 

So this, and VBF-83, are pretty important liveries, and darn nice as is.

Punch List:

Tail 'Stripe' - not a 'Ribbon'.

It's just occasional over-spray,  past the masking line, and then mostly cleaned up.

(noticed the clean-up from the old wing stripe - very nice detail, as is visible in the VMF-124 pic below)

Numbers - are too small, w/ the smaller number (single) segmenting.

Front Fuselage has a dull cowling ring, instead of just the flat top coating.

 

Fixes:

- Used the 'VBF10' codes with the 'VBF-83' side number font. (a little big, but of the right general size and type)

- Used the 'VBF10' Fuselage_01.  (, true}; -- , false};)

Can't fix the vertical tail paint.

 

This is a shot of VMF-124/213 Aboard. (notice the masked tail stripe and mostly cleaned up over-spray)

こんな感じでいいでしょうか？尾翼の塗装はマスキングテープを貼ったような感じで、艇番はVBF-83です。Luaの方は、そちらの塗装をそのまま使いました。

VMF-124 shouldn't have those additional stripes on either side of the bar. Take another look at the photo of the original #88.

I'm not even sure that's overspray. Rather I think what you're seeing in some of them is a reflection of the sun on the rudder frames above and below the stripe.

それがスプレー飛沫なのかどうかさえ分かりません。むしろ、ストライプの上下の舵枠に太陽光が反射しているのが見えるのではないでしょうか。

Is that the main wing stripe? If so, it stems from testing the 1944 specification version. The vertical tail is currently under adjustment. Would a slightly thinner version be preferable?

Looking pretty good, Tigershark.

As it's just residue, like the clean-up you did on the earlier 'VMF-213' '44 short wing stripes, for the '45 livery.

Even on the 'clean' 'white 88' image, there is still some residue visible, though not as much as the group image posted.

Your call, but that looks pretty good for the early version.

 

As for the VBF-38?

Clean might be better, like the image provided, as there is a lot there to start with, and was a CVG fleet requirement by then (27JAN45).

Flag would have been watching, so they probably cleaned them up pretty good, or even over-painted.

The 'VMF-213', on the other hand, was still just CVG-4 expedience.

As an aside:

If inclined, at your leisure, a short cowling ring (mustard yellow) 'VMF' version for the DCS 'VF-84' livery, like the (white) DCS 'VMF-214 - CV-13 Franklin' livery, would be very much appreciated, representing VMF-221 and VMF-451 aboard.

Maybe just cut/paste in clean cowling to the DCS 'VF-84' 'F4U-1D_Fuse_01'.dds, to reduce it to the 'VMF' version.

It appears to be at the panel line, which would make for a good break and transition.

Then maybe do the same to the DCS 'VF-84' 'F4U-1D_Fuse_01_RoughMet'.dds.

Missed this comment, and now tend to agree.

 

On further examination, Tigershark...

What has been identified and assumed as 'over-spray clean-up' on the 'VMF-213' images, may very well simply be light from the reinforcing rib lines of the vertical tail, above and below the paint stripe.

As they are proud of the surface and rounded, even double ribbed above, that would make sense, as they would catch light from above and broadcast it.

The stripes all appear to be clean at the masking, so could maybe just leave it at that.
