Yes and no. Actually XP can address a lot of RAM, but MS wants you to pay a license fee to give you the extended memory capability. The 2GB cap is thus fairly artificial.

ED are certainly working towards it, but it will take a while. This is what I had in mind when i asked if you could create regions that you can later stitch together :)

Yep I can think of entire continental areas to model: East Asia for instance with China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Another would be the entire Middle East from Israel to Iran and south towards the Gulf of Oman.

Actually if ED ever was interested in some good resolution maps to use globally here is something I've found:

Is this because 32 Bit operating systems can only use 2 GB of RAM? (Or 3GB with the Windows XP 3GB switch?)

Maybe in the future DCS can make the move to 64 bit and allow for larger maps.

seems more a CPU restriction . just watch the needs of FSX you'll have an idea of what's needed for a smooth sim . @ SimHQ they tested FSX few monthes ago and even with a high end rig and the brand new Intel extreme they used then , they hardly reached 30 fps . and in FSX AI is much more linear than in military stuff . on FSX wiki page they say the CPU does 80% of the work the GC doing the 20% remaining link

... In older games like Janes F-15, the maps were so large that some flights took 5+ hours... I'm not sure how many of us have that much time to devote on a weekend with real life obligations ;)

in SH3 if you don't use the time compression missions can last up to 9 monthes and more if a Catalina or a Short doesn't spot you sourire3.gif
