topol-m Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 A question: how to tell some artillery AI to attack enemy ground units? I`m putting a target marker close to the enemy positions with various radius 300m, 3000m... The stupid AI won`t attack them  (or maybe I`m stupid for not being able to work with the editor). Then I tried putting the target`s name (the group name) in the specified field for target`s name. Again of the 10 units of artillery only one fired several times and then stopped, reloading ammo or taking a break for launch??? I want ALL the units to attack, what should I do? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Grimes Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Artillery are fun, they actually have a set of rules that govern how they operate. The GUI manual will shed some light on it, but here are the basics... Artillery only attack from their last waypoint Only 4 artillery units in a group will attack at the same time. For a MRLS only 4 fire, and when they are done the next 4 fire... and so on With normal artillery it takes em FOREVER to run out of ammo. So if you want them all to fire make them separate groups. If the target area is greater than 50m they just shell the entire area. If the target area is smaller than 50m they will attempt to focus their fire on that point Some artillery are limited to where they can fire. For example the "SMERCH" is limited in the direction it can fire. I forget the exact numbers, but approximately it can only fire 40 degrees in either direction off the heading it is facing. Likewise I think there is a no fire zone for it if it is pointing directly at the target. If the arty aren't firing, move them around until they do fire. 1 The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Case Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 And also don't forget that they have a maximum range beyond which they will not fire. Here is an FC1.12 thread that has all the ranges, it probably applies to FC2.0 as well: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=338969&postcount=9 1 There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Do you mean longer away than 50km or the target size greater than 50m??

topol-m Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 Hey thanks for tips! I had difficulties testing 70 units of artillery (Smerch, Grad, MSTA...) assigned to 7 groups. I`m gonna test them again and report the results  [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Case Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Yessss, big difference  :furious: Fire hell in Kutaisi That is the way we want to see it! What was it that needed to be changed to get this? There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
topol-m Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 Well basically everything mentioned above :) In the first place the groups I had created consisted of 10 units each, then they didn`t have waypoints so their facing was unknown, finally some of them (bm-21 Grad) were not in firing range  [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Case Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 That sounds like this was an excellent learning opportunity. Also note that you do not have to specify waypoints to have units facing a particular direction. You can specify the heading of each unit separately. Usually I create the units inside the group first, like 4 artillery units, 2 trucks for logistics, 1 CP (Command Post) for communications, 1x IFV for infantry, and then some infantry around it. You can add air defences as you like. The artillery is then pointing in a specific direction, with the other units pointing in semi random directions. Also that you can make templates of these. This is VERY VERY helpful, as you can specify them for one direction (say heading 0 degrees), save it as a template, and then place a new template where the whole group is rotated towards some other heading. topol-m Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 Very useful info. What is the command post for? I know what it does in real life but in the game what does it change in units behaviour? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
