Targeting Diamond Air to Ground Missions

When conducting Ground Attacks with the A-10 the targeting diamond only appears when more than one plane is involved in the mission.

 

If I create a mission and select my ground targets, and don't add at least one wingman...the target diamond does not appear.

 

Is this what is really supposed to happen or is it a bug?
