hachiman Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Hi I used to play LOMAC and could do ok in the Russian fighters in BVR mode. It was just a case of changing the range scale and scanning up,down, left right. Whereas now you have to input a range. I am inputting the range as called by AWAC's, but i don't think i'm getting the hang of the height. I set up missions with perhaps 4 bandits coming towards me and have the radar in HRPF mode and am moving the scale up and down and am lucky if i get 1 hit on radar. What does each increment do on the height change mean? 1km above or below and does 1-0 mean dead level with your plane? I've watched the training vid and it looks so easy, but i scan up and down for targets i know are there and am lucky to see anything. Any help, advice or training tracks and vids appreciated.
Exorcet Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 You don't really need to use the range scale. Before I completely configured the controls for each plane, I just left the scale at default and estimated my radar cone's orientation from the altitude scale. That said, actually using the range scale does help. As for your question, I think you're right on the alt scale, the numbers are in km, and if there is a '-' in front of the number it means below. 0 is same altitude. As for the targets you are practicing on, how far did you place them from your plane? Also, are they enemies? Set them to friendly if they are so that they don't maneuver when you turn on the radar. hachiman Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 I've been practicing against friends and enemys. Mostly large transport or tanker type planes. Ok. So i have the choice between just doing it the old fashioned way or the manual input way? So having the default 10 in the estimated target range indicator won't affect me changing the range in the HDD Display beyond that(Which i prefer)? Also in LOMAC I used to see triangles for enemy planes in the HDD when they appeared in my radar cone, but now i only get a triangle in lock or when on AWACs detection. Is that right? Thanx
Exorcet Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Yes, the radar can see up to its maximum range even if the selected range is at its minimum value. The only thing the range dial does is adjust the elevation scale. You can choose to use it or ignore it. As for seeing radar contacts on the HDD, you cannot without AWACS or a lock on. The HUD is what the pilot must use for targeting. The HDD is for navigation and GCI/AWACS direction. nomdeplume Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 This thread have a fair bit of discussion about the expected range setting and optimum scanning techniques (particularly post #10): http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=54965
