Skeeyer Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Just quick run down. Would like to replace everything but chassis, DVD/rw(6 months old), cooling systems, and power supply. Not sure about the sound card it's old. This system was built in 2003 or 2004. The hdd must go it's only 50 gb. As for a monitor I use my 42 inch RCA tv and sound through a surround sound. I'll get and post the numbers off stuff like the motherboard, soundcard and such today. If it will help I can try to post some picks of the chassis inside and out, or is there something more you need to determine if or what motherboard will fit. EtherealN Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Do you happen to have a model name on that DVD-RW? If you follow the dxdiag stuff I posted and attach the txt file to a post (click "Go Advanced" and use the paperclip icon) I should be able to lift all relevant data on sound card, DVD and so on to check compatibility. Udat Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Perhaps keep the memory chip and get another one (or two) like it? I'll point to the gtx 560ti again, it really looks like it's great value for money at 250 USD, almost equaling the gtx 480 in a lot of games. EtherealN Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Agreed on the 560Ti Udat. As you can see, I have one of those now, and for these simulators it is extremely good. In the case of FC2 I can run that on all max on one screen while the other screen plays HD video. Gonna have to see about whether it can be squeezed into a budget though, but it's definitely worth trying. :) Skeeyer, Yeah, that 6800 will have to go. It is Dx9-capable so it's not as catastrophic as it could be, but ... I'm preliminarily happy with the Audigy sound card. One worry - do you use the gameport for your stick? That type of port pretty much doesn't exist anymore, and if so we'd either have to find something that has a gameport or squeeze a stick into the budget. Udat Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) That's nice to hear, EtheralN! And if you at some point want to triple-head or just need some more bang, you can SLI it without ruining yourself :) I'm gonna take a crack at it with newegg: CPU/motherboard combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.591630 $215 Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144 $105 Harddrive/PSU combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.592877 $150 Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112238 $70 DVD ROM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118040 $18 GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130604&cm_re=GTX_560_ti-_-14-130-604-_-Product $250 EDIT: Get Gigabytes insane factory overclocked one instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125362 $270 <--- It is supposedly leaving the gtx 570 in the dust! Hmm that is totalling to $808, there might be room for win7 in there? I am honestly not too sure about that motherboard/CPU combo. It seems a shame not to get a sandy bridge right now. I don't know anything about the casing either, it just kind of "seemed" pretty good for it's price. Skeeyer Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 I just ordered a new stick and rudder peddles. Agh not the x52 bit the next one that's black. So the game port is not a prob. EtherealN Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) One small note - make sure those memory sticks are on the QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for that motherboard. I have those exact sticks, but can only use one of them and only in the B2 slot due to incompatibility. (So learn from my mistake and always doublecheck QVL. :/ ) Edited February 9, 2011 by EtherealN [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester

Udat Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) Yeah, that's why I said I'm unsure.. I'm not really computersavvy, I kinda just read up on hardware a bit before building my new computer. What do you think of what I picked, apart from the motherboard incompatibility? EDIT: perhaps you could suggest a different one? EDIT2: Or perhaps change the memory chips to these XMS3 1333 mhz ones: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145315 It would save in $25, more than making up for the price increase with the better graphics card. Skeeyer Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) looks like my proposed budget has gone up to around $1000 USD +/- a few. But i need to be sure everything for a complete build is included even OS. Guess you can say just looking at a total build right. I,m gonna let my son have my old system for his games and school work. Thanks for the help. Udat Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 It's my pleasure! If I were you I'd keep poking around on forums and websites for a while before buying, get all the input you can. As I said, I'm not very good at this, so don't take my suggestion at face value. Maybe EtherealN will come up with a package for you; he seems to know his stuff. EtherealN Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Well, one thing to note is that even if the budget went up, there's no harm in sticking to the old budget - that way, if something goes wrong it won't force you over the budget. If nothing goes wrong - buy yourself and the lads a couple pints, or purchase more simulators! :D And to be honest, that proposal looks relatively good - you did a good job with it Udat. There's always tuning that can be done of course, but let's not feature-creep the build. :) I'll try to get a proposition done today, but there's a lot of work to squeeze in today and I'm off on contract for the weekend. (But if I can't get it done today, I should be able to do it from the hotel tomorrow evening. It's not like my netbook can play much in the way of games anyway - my Desire is a better gaming rig than that thing. :P ) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
