The Secret World of Embedded Computers

The Mighty Xbox Controller

It should be obvious that the 2001 Microsoft Xbox game console itself—that big black box hooked to your TV set—contains a computer. But it's not alone.

I opened up an S-Type Xbox controller and found an Atmel AT43USB353M microcontroller at its heart that can run at 12 or 24 MHz and packs 24KB of program storage space and 1KB of working RAM. The handy thing about this chip is that it incorporates its own USB hub, which makes sense for a USB-compatible controller.

Chew on this for a minute: the processor used in the controller of the Xbox is more powerful than the main CPU used in every pre-1990s game console.
