The Smithsonian has been planning an exhibition on the "art of videogames" since December 2009. It's still more than a year away from being a reality, but from now through April 7, gamers can vote on what 80 games they believe should be featured. The exhibition is to take place at the American Art Museum (located in Washington, D.C.) from March 16, 2012 through September 30, 2012. It will be comprised of works from five different eras spanning the 1970s all the way up to the present generation. One aspect of it will be an exploration of the "many influences on game designers, and the pervasive presence video games have in the broader popular culture, with new relationships to video art, film and television, educational practices, and professional skill training."

It'll also feature video interviews with developers and artists, screenshots, videos, game consoles, still images, and even some playable games. It's all being curated by Chris Melissinos, the chief gaming officer of Java creator Sun Microsystems.

Bushido Blade should definitely be among the 4th era candidates. That was a classically beautiful game. Batman Arkham Asylum is another big omission.
