Is there a way to make AI controlled armour attack a static bridge, for instance, and have it rendered impassable?

In this patch, no, I don't think so, since fire at point is broken. Fire at point will probably work next patch.

If arty were working, it would be possible to get it to "Fire at Point", as Speed says. But AI armor, i.e. tanks, vehicles or indees AI aircraft without the "Fire at Point" menu option, cannot be tasked to fire at map objects that have not been placed by the user. This creates an inability to use bridges tactically in mission-making because the sim is just not configured to incorporate them in targeting AI or to give AI or human units credit for attacking them successfully. The only thing you can do to work around this is to cheat it so that the armor is tasked on a user-placed unit (visible or invisible) that is on the bridge (or on or near any other map object that you want targeted or destroyed). This is a very jury-rigged workaround, though, and not really satisfactory. In my opinion, the inability to use static objects, especially bridges, tactically in missions -- i.e. be able to get the AI, other than artillery, to target them so that the sim acknowledges the target -- is a major weakness in the ME's capability to create a battlefield.

I had a feeling this would be the answer. Hopefully this is something that's possible to remedy in a future patch.

I'll play with the idea of putting a unit on the bridge and see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

And if anyone from ED is listening ... Pretty please !?

Actually, armor, AAA, any ground units- do in fact have the fire at point option, and last I checked before this patch, it worked too. You could make a tank fire at point. They still have the fire at point task this patch, but it is broken and who knows, when they restore it, they may only restore it for arty.

You can also give aircraft a "bombing" task that allows them to attack any spot on the map you want- but you know that already, right? Like you can tell an F-15E to use a JDAM on a very specific point on the map, and he will hit it to very high level of accuracy.

It looks like they are fixing this in the next patch. Hooray.

Meanwhile I'm getting the enemy to attack an invisible target which I spawn at a particular TZ and then use explosion to ensure the bridge is destroyed.
