The east has four fighters and two muds? I'd say they have two fighters and one mud, though some subversions of the fighters are there as well. Remember that to make, for example, an F-16, you have to work from scratch. But to make the MiG-29S you have tonnes of work already done because you have massive commonality with the other MiG variants and the Flankers too.

As for why not make it even? Because it costs money to develop, and the focus of ED right now is on DCS where, you might have noticed, we currently have one russian helicopter, one american attack plane, and the next one is american as well.

A further complication in this case is that Lock On is owned by Ubi-soft, not ED.

I don't know which aspects weigh heaviest on their planning though.

Pretty much (though it is of course simplified - there's things that don't carry over even between the russian birds, but the fundamentals do).

My personal guess though is that they just don't want to spend too much effort and money on a product they don't own - UbiSoft owns the rights to Lock On. For a comparison, note how Bioware switched from almost exclusively doing D&D games into mainly working on their own stuff (Jade Empire, Dragon Age, Mass Effect).

Off topic: The happy plane is an Avro Shackleton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Shackleton

On topic: Lock-on's mostly Russian flyable hangar is the main reason I never bought it. I wanted more western stuff to fly, and I didn't realize how great the A-10 was until DCS, but I have enjoyed Blackshark and Warthog so much that I'm wondering if I should reconsider. The MiG-29 has always been one of my favorites, and the canards on the Su-33 look very cool. At this point I'm just worried that it might feel like a step backwards from DCS. Either way, I'm not really concerned about there being less U.S. Planes anymore, especially since I know the next DCS will be one.
