I have been doing DCS: Warthog since its 1st new purchase around March 2011. Now, I would like to try the helicopter, preferably in English. I want a good quality purchase of the game and its spiral bound operator manual. I live in New York State, USA

Also, I have 3 hard drives on my i7-920 machine: one is Windows 7 Ultimate-64 bit; one is Windows 7 Home-32 bit; and one will soon be partially Windows XP Professional version. What would be the best way to install the game?

Time is of no real importance, so I figure a direct purchase from DCS. A CD would be nice, but the English version is an online download it looks to be. Does this include the latest patch update?

Does the operators' manual mail from England? Or is their a better source for USA purchasers?

Thanks for any help.

Definitely install on windows 7-64 bit. As for the manual it ships from the fighter colletion hangar somewhere in England, I think but could be wrong. I had the manual shipped to oklahoma and it took a month and a half before I had it in my hands. However, this could have been due to my dumbass apartment staff that lost it in their closet for awhile so I dont know exactly how long it took to reach me.

The manual is very good quality except for the binding that keeps it all together. I started having pages fall out just a few hours after I got it. I recommend you take the manual to FedEx Office and have them put a coil binding on it. It functions way better and it was very cheap to have it rebound, only $5 to $7 to do so.

Also If you want to play BS any time soon I would recommend just downloading it directly from their website and then just burn it onto a disc. I dont prefer steam cause you have to have internet to play it, dont you?

Hope this helps, feel free to ask me any questions if you need. The manual was a good purchase in my opinion, its nice to have it in paper form where it can rest on your lap or something when youre flying

Steam has an offline mode.

Hi,

I tried to purchase the sim on the DCS "HOME" site here to the e-Sales or whatever they named it, using Firefox. I could not get it to work to purchase it, so I downloaded it anyway. Under the false assumption, I thought maybe because I purchased Warthog in February, maybe that serial number would suffice. Not!

I downloaded it to Windows 7 Ultimate-64 bit. It placed itself in C:\Progams (x86) for 32-bit programs.

Got thinking about it the next day, so I went to Windows Internet Explorer version 9 and did the process and purchased it through DCS using IE9 and purchased it with credit card online, no problem at all. Then with serial number in hand, immediately downloaded the game, version 1.00 .

I put everything I had already downloaded temporarily in the Recycle Bin.

The operator's manual I purchased through Amazon.com several days before, should be here July 29, 2011.

The Black Shark version 1.00 works just fine offline. I saved the two files to a folder in MY DOCUMENTS.

Downloading the multiplayer version 1.0.2 I encounter both in the offline and also the multiplayer desktop shortcuts, many errors, missing .lua modules (files) and I cannot get into OPTIONS.

So, I went into Windows Control Panel to uninstall the version 1.0.2 (which I also have a separate MY DOCUMENTS folder, uninstalled that, too). And reinstalled Black Shark 1.0.0 version. The original version works just fine, so far, as I am extremely a noob at Black Shark. One thing I have noticed is: a lot of the same Warthog keyboard commands are identical in Black Shark. My CH controls work in GAME mode. I did not try REAL mode, yet. (I fly Warthog in full REAL simulation mode due to the limitations of the CH profile I use.)

And I have the CH Products trilogy which I need to setup, yet and hopefully find a good profile pre-made. I know the CH Control Manager process of creating my own map as I did it for Aces High. But, I am still learning the CH setup process. I still play Aces High as I like their big azz server and hundreds of players to fight.

As to Black Shark version 1.0.2 , I will keep experimenting. I have a few ideas. As I was initially downloading it in IE9, I was off doing something else in Firefox. Maybe that caused some kind of conflict. So, I will reload it 1st through IE9. If that doesn't work properly, then I will uninstall it and try through Firefox. Also, I wonder if version 1.0.1 needs to be downloaded 1st before 1.0.2 . I read one of the Stickys that downloading version 1.0.1 first was not necessary to do.

I know I can go to the online servers in version 1.0.2; I got that far, but for some reason the server moderator bounced me out. I just went to Multiplayer mode to look around. I had no intention to fly, just yet and cause no deliberate mischief or any mischief. As to Warthog, I think some of the moderators know who their team-mates are and are setup for their squad. In Warthog I have only found two squads to fly with that are genuinely friendly for noobs. Warthog I do pretty good. I just wanted a change.

Thanks for help already and any future help and advice.

Regarding downloads, find a program that can check file md5-hashes and you can check that the installers are fine without re-downloading. You'll find hashes for the files on the donwload link. No need to re-download. This one should work: http://www.fastsum.com/press/md5-hash.php

My first and initial reaction is: don't install into Program Files. Windows is extremely jealous of that folder. Try installing into something like C:\Games, remember to run installer as administrator, and see how that goes.

Hi,

I did not deliberately install into Program Files. When I ran the setup.exe program, that is where I found it. But I did have the option to move it.

Since writing this earlier, I went to my Firefox, went to DCS HOME where the 1.0.1c patch is, entered my user-name and password and downloaded that patch. That works OK.

<edit> I just did the same for the 1.0.2 patch and same missing files and problem occurred. I changed to Run as Administrator under Compatability and good to go, now. All that extra work for a stupid forgetful omission.

I used to play the Microprose sim, "Gunship" which was realistic enough in the 1980's, on my Commodore-64. That was fairly realistic given the computer technology then.

Thanks so much for the advice. I will look at what you have suggested. A lot I do not know concerning computers and separately, the gaming world as to the utilities available.

I know all about "Run as Administrator" and still forget to do it.

Now to figure out how to build a CH Controls profile.

Thanks.

Erich

What is a Checksum?

Hi,

(Moving this Message #9 over to the "Hardware and Software" forum or whatever you guys call yours to DCS and will re-ask it there.)

I am totally ignorant of this subject.

Would you mind elaborating or enlightening me as to what a checksum is and what the program does? Do not go nuts as to too much detail, just enough basics so I may proceed with the utility.

I cannot be the only one that has encountered this situation with the 1.0.2 Patch, a Russian guy speaking comments and English written subtitles.

Thanks
