KILSEK Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Hi all. For the past two nights I have been practicing refueling, 1-1/2 nights in the 33 and 1/2 of last night in the 15. I have noticed that as I close in on the tankers there becomes more and more turbulence. I have even noticed draft. As I close in at ~10 MPH/whatever airspeed, at distance I am not closing the gap too fast. In fact from ~2 miles out it takes about 8 minutes to get within 1/2 mile. When I start getting within 1/2 mile of her, I start encountering light turbulence, and now I am starting to make more stick corrections. Shortly thereafter, I start noticing draft. Now there are throttle corrections. I am using flaps & airbrake to try to counter all these effects. These effects are great. I have not hooked up yet, but I will. Short of setting up the refueling waypoints, raising/opening the refueling probe/port, and turning on my exterior lights, is all I have to do? If these effects are modelled for the tankers. Aren't they probably modelled for the jets too? I mean if you start getting so close(on the six) to another jet, wouldn't you start noticing turbulence and draft too? Isn't that jetwash? For the folks who fly aerobatic teams, have you noticed this? I suppose it comes down to how much and when it affects you. Anyway those are my thoughts and questions. -KILSEK
NEODARK Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 You should try this, I just got it today and Im doing MUCH better when it comes to air refueling... Only 1 succesfull hookup so far, but this really helped me out a lot, get it, and run the mission, its great :) PS: send me a PM if you weant and we can both practice online, I'd love to have have a squad mate. send me a PM and let me know  LINK: http://flankertraining.com/lomac/missions/Aerial_Refueling_V1-01.zip
KILSEK Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 Hi all and NEODARK. I d/l it and will check it out tonight. FWIW, I have never used the training tracks. I eventually look at the manual, but only after I have tried something over and over again, and failed at it over and over again. :icon_redf I am kinda hard-headed that way. I always like learning hands on. Thanks, -KILSEK
NEODARK Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 No prob.. PS this isn't a training track per say. You'll open it as a mission and just sit back, watch and listen to what to do. after you get the gist of it you can try your luck. I have some pre-set missions I downloaded somewhere where everything is pre-set just for air-refueling. let me know
159th_Dorsk81 Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Turbulence, Jet Wash, & Refueling. I agree to point. When refueling you do encounter some difficulties. Especially if the tanker is flying below 400km per hour. The Su-33 can become difficult to control at slow speeds especially when trying to connect to the drougue. I find that when setting up a tanker flight I make sure that the altitude is locked and that the tanker is flying at a speed anywhere above 500kph. Try that setting and I am sure you will notice the difference in the flight characteristics of your plane. Also try a refuelling flight on HL. The host is the only person who can see the drougues. As a client you have to fly using the cues on the HUD until you connect, then the drougues become visible. It's great practice and helps fine tune your stick control... Best of luck with that. Only the spirit of attack born in a brave heart will bring success to any BVR or Dogfight no matter how highly developed the fighter may be.
bSr.LCsta Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Here is a little step by step for the Su-33. Maybe it will help you guys. http://teambsr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3670 is this ok?
