So I've decided to purcahse the BS2 upgrade from the steam version of BS1. I'm concerned that for whatever reason, the two versions will be incompatible (I've read that this was a concern during the initial launch period). Can somebody walk me through how to upgrade correctly so the BS1 steam version is detected correctly and so that there will be no activation issue with BS2? I really want to buy this, but not if there is a problem recognizing the steam version of BS1. Thanks for the help!

There was on the day of release. There isn't anymore. Download all the four files from the website for BS2 1.1.1.1 UPGRADE version. Then buy yourself a key from their E-shop. Make sure all four files are within one folder and install. When you first click fly you'll be asked to activate.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Or, just install those upgrade version before purchasing. If it installs at all, you're good and set. Then purchase a key (and make sure the key is for the version you downloaded) and you're good. At this point, BS1 can be uninstalled. (Though, if you should later need to reinstall Upgrade BS2, you'll have to install BS1 again first. Same as with the LOMAC requirement for FC2.)

The issue at launch was that the installer did not correctly detect, amongst others, Steam versions of BS1. This was fixed a couple days after release.

i'm really confused. I see the 4 files to upgrade from bs1 1.0 to bs2 1.1.1.1. I download those, put them all in the same folder. Then what do I do with that folder and how do I use the key I'll buy from the eshop in conjunction with those files to successfully activate bs2?

You don't technically upgrade "from" BS1 "to" BS2. Black Shark 2 will be a separate install. The "upgrade" option is simply that you get a cheaper price because you already have BS1. So this is not actually patching your BS1 install, the only purpose of the BS1 install is to check that you have it and was eligible for that reduced price.

The files you want is here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?scr=product&ProductId=13&end_pos=135&lang=en

Once downloaded, just start the exe file (KA-50_full_en_bsupd_1.1.1.1.exe) and install wherever you like - I'd suggest something like C:\Games\BS2

You use the license key the first time you start a mission, to activate the product. (There will be a popup box asking for it.)

For multiplayer, it will be linked to the account you used on the website during the purchase.

When doing the purchase, make sure to double-check that you are on the "Upgrade" purchase - the 20 dollar one. :)
