billeinstein Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 On manual page 59, the text in red box: "During landing, the Gyro Selector switch should be set to FIXED to prevent damage to the gyro." But on real P-51D an P-47N manual, it says: "Note: To avoid damage, gyro must be runing during every takeoff and landing. You turn it off only in the event of failure." There is no Gyro Selector Switch setting waring on historical manual at all. It just turn on/off the lamp, not gyro. And K-14 sight has no sun fliter glass in DCS. Is the colored glass effect difficult to build in the graphic engine? And the K-14 in DCS feels very accurate even for a snap shot. The gyro always follows the trajectory. In most case there is no need to "Track the target smoothly for one second". This part is just my personal feeling now. A further test will be taken if I have time. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
some1 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Both quotes are true. Gyro is powered by the on/off switch and later gunsight models had it removed, gyro was powered immediately when battery was turned on. Setting gunsight switch to FIXED only holds the gyro to some extent in the magnetic field, so it won't jump around freely, but it's still spinning. Hardware: VPForce Rhino, FSSB R3 Ultra, Virpil WarBRD, Hotas Warthog, Winwing F15EX, Slaw Rudder, GVL224 Trio Throttle, Thrustmaster MFDs, Saitek Trim wheel, Trackir 5, Quest Pro
billeinstein Posted December 6, 2012 Author Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) There is a note about magnetic field in P-47N manual: "Operation of the gun sight gyro affects the magnetic compass. A separate compass correction card is mounted on the instrument panel for use when the gunsight is ON(NOT FIX-my word). Be sure to use the correct card." Maybe the USAAF think the Gyro Selector Switch position is not as important as the gyro switch, so they diden't write it on the manual. If the DCS manual says right, pilots will damage their K-14 gunsight unconsciously.:D Edited December 6, 2012 by billeinstein [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
