Hey, anyone done this mission? If so, I would really like some pointers/advice/strategy tips. I've lost count the number of times I've tried this mission (honestly I've racked up at least 20+)... every single one has ended in a failure due to that SA-11 that's parked further up the valley looking down on Kazbegi.

My feeling is that I've got to neutralise that threat first before I can start working with the JTAC to pick off targets up and down the valley. The big problem I find is that by the time I'm in range with the TGP to line up some mark points I'm just getting a volley of SAM's coming at me hard. I've managed a couple of times to knock out the search radar in the centre of the formation with a MAV but that was probably more luck than anything else.

I've tried coming at it from various angles and altitudes (20,000ft down to a low 100ft run up the winding valley). I've deviated quite a lot from the flight plan just to try something different but every single time I end up eating missile.

Cheers!

Tips for Battle of Kazbegi

Hello Stacker first id like to say thanks for the enthusiasm in flying my mission i think that's great! I assure you i planned a way for people to take out that SA-11 first and your right i do go after that first when i do the mission.

i enter the valley the same as where the way points are south of Kazbegi at 10,000 ft above sea level. I stay somewhat to the right of the valley keeping it such that the missile site cannot see me until I am much farther up the valley.

The general loc of the missile site is in way-points so set that way-point up on your hud and slave all other sensors to that location making your targeting pod spi. as you fly up the valley stay about halfway between the middle deepest part of the valley and the right hand peaks.

As you go up the valley eventually the bit of hill masking you there will get lower and lower as perspective goes giving line of site onto the sa-11 site, as soon as you can see it through the trees put the Total Velocity Vector smoothly right on top of the SA-11 site this keeps your line of site to it just above the trees, if you see more than 40ish feet of air between the line u draw from your eye to the site then they will target you and fire. I only tested it extensively on this route but i know there are others.

I prefer to use the MAVs slaved to the TGP. Target with the pod, then quickly switch to the mavericks lock and fire, this all has to be done quickly and with a stable hand because if you jar the plane it will loose its lock momentarily. Takes a smoother operator, and you gotta be quick, no room for mistakes. When i do it i go as fast as i can, descending from 10,000 after i get line of site, firing at about 8000ft making small adjustments to my path as i target and attempt to lock. As long as you stay so line of site is close enough to the ground they should not be able to track you.

You will notice that there is another deep valley that merges with the main one on the right as you fly up the main valley (This is typically my first egress route and its hard to make the turn after firing). I tend to get a lock right when i think i am too far up the main valley to make the turn for that valley on the right, but if u turn hard and get the lock right with a stable plane your not. Its important you keep your plane stable to get a lock and make sure you zoom in the mav.

This mission was designed as a challenge for solid pilots as it requires you to prepair a lot, and do a few things at the same time when you wish your eyes could be more place than one.

Let me know if there's anything you find as a bug or that you would like to change id love to hear some feedback and its great that other people get to try my favorite missions that i have created.

Hey, thanks for the reply & tips!

I have this mission burnt into my head so I know exactly what terrain features you are talking about. Yeah, I know the egress point you mean (hard right and then up the valley) - I've also used that valley as an ingress point but it leaves you so vulnerable to a long range shot from the SAM site.

In the past I've flown up the main valley (roughly following the way points), then tried to hit the SA-11 site and then veered slightly right and then up & over the mountain range, there's a cliff on the other side and then a large flat area that I've used as a staging point to get my systems set up for another run.

I'll give your suggested route a try tonight and see if I can make further progress - seems the trick is to use the terrain to block the line of sight whilst you push up that valley.

Thanks for putting the time in to making a great mission!

Cheers,

Stacker.
