Zephyr Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Greetings ED Forums, I recently got rid of an older worn HOTAS stick I was using to replace it with a new X52 Pro system along with the Saitek Pro pedals. Everything seems to work fine, except for button 5 (BTN5), the left-most 'flat' button on the stick head. When I enter BTN5 for the Trimmer control, it freezes the simulator and causes a forced close of the program. The weird thing is that if I enter BTN5 with a modifier, such as a keyboard shortcut, or BTN7 on the throttle which I also use as a modifier, it works just fine. It's only when I use BTN5 alone ... and it is at the moment that I hit the 'OK' button that everything freezes and has to be closed. The idea was to use BTN5 for the Trimmer, and BTN5 + BTN7 as the Trimmer Reset, as I understand this is a common way of doing it. But regardless of what I enter BTN5 (alone) for, it crashes the program. I've been searching the forums for about 3 days looking for the answer to this specific problem but so far I haven't found any solution. Is there anything I can change, check or modify to test why BTN5 is crashing the program when entered? Thank you.
Erforce Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Are you talking about the "C" button ? mine is sensitive, but i use it for trim too without problem. Although for reset, pinkie+C is simpler. Is it programmed via SST or internal DCS ? Mine is SST, but you could try assigning this button via BS settings. Hope your cables are all right too. if you see some lights flickering, it's not good. Zephyr Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 Hey Erforce, Yes you are correct, it is button 'C'. It shows up as JOY_BTN5 in the BS control profile options. It works fine if I assign it along with a modifier. For example, the Trimmer Reset is currently set to JOY_BTN5 + JOY_BTN7 and it works fine to reset the Trim, but if I try to assign BTN5 alone -no modifier- that's when is crashes the program (the moment I hit the 'OK' button to assign it). There are no blinking lights, and as far as I can tell no other button or joystick control crashes the program. Only BTN5. Everything else seems to work perfectly. I'm using BTN7 as a modifier (secondary function type thing) so I can cram as many controls as I can into the stick and throttle so I'll seldom have to take my hands off them. Although I have it, I am not familiar with using SST software.
Zephyr Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 I try uninstalling and reinstalling the Saitek drivers. I also redid the stick/control commands in the DCS options-controls menu, still no joy. I add some picture to help illustrate what is happening. I add a picture of the joystick so you know what button I'm referring to. Here is the main DCS controls menu. The trim reset is currently set to JOY_BTN5 + JOY_BTN7 as a modifer. This works good. Next is a picture of the dialog box, where a joystick button can be assigned to a BS control, in this case which is JOY_BTN5 to the trim. As soon as I hit the 'OK' button to make the change, I next get a program crash as you will see in the picture. I have checked and double checked the X52 Pro. There seem to be no problem as everything else is working very flawlessly. Does anyone please have any suggestion?
Erforce Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Wait, you don't use SST at all? Did you tried it at least for that button? Its not really hard to understand. I use it all the time. only way to use the mini-stick and 3modes+clutch... tell me. Zephyr Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 No I don't use SST. For a number of reasons. 1. You can not program 2 buttons to do 1 thing, like what I've been talking about. 2. If an SST profile is active, many of the button functions I have programmed in DCS will not function correctly or will not function at all. 3. SST is known for causing crashes or freezes. Honestly I don't see the point of using SST when everything can be programmed in DCS. Or at least you should be able to. Frankly SST seems a bit anemic to me. If I setup a SST profile many of my other functions programmed in DCS will not work. What I'm trying to do is actually extremely simple, which is to use button 7 as a modifier button. It's like using any other key on a keyboard to modify another key or button, except it's a key/button located on the throttle. This way I can literally double the function of each button on my stick and throttle. Just one example of that is I can use POV HAT 2 to not just slew the shkval, but also then zoom and frame the shkval simply by holding button 7. Does that makes sense? It's based on a profile that Puddlemonkey posted a few years ago here http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=83752&page=2 It is actually working very well, all except for button 5 or 'C' button. As far as my button 5 goes, it works in everything else, and it lights up on the applet panel when installing the drivers. The problem is in BS and I would like to figure out what it is.
