Operation Cardigan

Summer 1997. The Second Crimean War has entered its 4th year and the combined armies of Turkey , France and Great Britain are threatening to overrun the Crimea . Enemy forces are established along a front stretching from Balaklava in the south to Dzhankoy in the north. The Turkish 78th Armoured Division has just moved up to the front in the Lekarstvennoe sector and it is likely that they will soon commence a new offensive. The aim of Operation Cardigan is to weaken the enemy in the south-western Crimea . You are to lead a flight of Russian Federation Air Force (VVS) Su-27 fighters from the 1054th Fighter Aviation Regiment flying from Kerch-Bagerovo Air Base. Your main task will be to provide air cover for our CAS missions over the battlefield; however, you may be required to carry out ground attack assignments due to the desperate situation in the region.

Mission 1 Escort

Day 1, 09:30 Hrs. Su-25Ts of 9368th Shturmovik Aviation Regiment flying from Kirovskoye Air Base have been tasked with attacking Turkish armour around the town of Lekarstvennoe. Get airborne with your wingman and rendezvous with the Su-25s at SP2 at 09:55 Hrs. French Air Force Mirage jets have been carrying out occasional fighter sweeps over the region. Escort the Su-25Ts to the target zone at SP3. The mission will not be considered complete until their assigned targets are destroyed.

Weather fine with scattered cloud at 1000 metres. Temperature 20 deg.

An A-50 AWACS will be on station south of Feodosija at 09:50 Hrs.

Mission 2 Air Strike at Causeway Heights

Tip: In this mission the goals have been assigned to your side but no targets have been set so don’t expect to see the target icon in the HUD. An Su-17 will mark the enemy with rockets so expect to see smoke at SP3 at 15:35 Hrs.

A lot of the action takes place close to the built up area so if your FPS takes a hit open the mission in the editor and remove some of the superfluous armour.

Day 2, 15:00 Hrs. The situation in the south-western Crimea has deteriorated considerably over the past few hours. Turkish M-48 tanks of the elite 1854th Armoured Regiment have moved out of Sevastopol and light tanks of the Duke of Berwickshire’s Royal Lancers are taking up their battle formation north of Balaklava .

Anti-armour strikes are today’s priority so you and your wingman have been loaded with rockets and bombs for ground attack. Your targets are Turkish tanks and support vehicles 4 kilometres north-west of Balaklava . Your time on target (SP3) is 15:35 Hrs and it will be marked by rockets.

Weather fine with scattered cloud at 1000 metres. Temperature 30 deg.

AWACS not available.

Mission 3 Air Strike at the Alma River

Day 3, 10:30 Hrs. The British have taken Alupka and Jalta and their advance has paused at Danilovka. Our focus has now shifted to the Lekarstvennoe sector were the Turkish 78th Armoured Division has engaged our forces.

The enemy offensive is very dependent on its supplies getting across the Alma River at Gerojskoe. The bridge at Gerojskoe (SP4) is you target today and it is well defended with AAA. A Regiment of Su-25s has already been lost on this target in the last 24 hours. Unless you can destroy the river crossing our ground forces in the Lekarstvennoe sector will be defeated. It will not be possible to mark the targets for you.

Weather fine with scattered cloud at 1000 metres. Temperature 25 deg.

AWACS not available.

Mission 4 TARCAP at Lekarstvennoe

Day 3, 16:50 Hrs. This mission starts with you already flying a TARCAP at 4,000 metres over Lekarstvennoe. A pair of Su-25s from 8788th Shturmovik Aviation Regiment have been tasked to attack Turkish armour in the town at 17:00 Hrs. You are to ensure that the Su-25s are able to complete their task without being intercepted by enemy fighters. The mission will be considered a failure if the Su-25s are unable to destroy their targets.

Weather fine with scattered cloud at 1000 metres. Temperature 20 deg.

An A-50 AWACS is on station north-west of Feodosija.

Mission 5 HAVCAP at Kalinovka

Day 4, 09:30 Hrs. This mission starts with you already flying a HAVCAP at 8,000 metres over Kalinovka. You are to protect the A-50 AWACS aircraft and destroy any enemy aircraft that may try and intercept it. Turkish Air Force F-4s have been flying fighter sweeps over the region.

Weather at altitude is fine; however most of our airfields are fogged-in with visibilities down to 300 metres. Temperature 10 deg.

Mission 6 BARCAP at Pjatihatka

Day 4, 16:45 Hrs. This mission starts with you already flying a BARCAP at 4,000 metres over Pjatihatka. Turkish Air Force F-5s have been attacking our supply columns as they head down towards the Lekarstvennoe sector. Our ground troops are running out of ammunition so it is vital that you prevent any further enemy aircraft crossing into our airspace.

Weather fine with scattered cloud at 1,500 metres. Temperature 20 deg.

An A-50 AWACS is on station over the Sea of Azov .

Mission 7 BARCAP at the Bulganak River

Day 5, 09:50 Hrs. This mission starts with you already flying a BARCAP at 5,000 metres over the Bulganak River . The left flank of the Turkish 78th Armoured Division has collapsed and our forces are poised to retake the town of Lekarstvennoe .

Our Early Warning Radar at Udachnoe has detected three groups of bandits crossing the coast at Sevastopol heading towards the Lekarstvennoe sector. You must intercept and destroy these enemy aircraft.

Weather fine with scattered cloud at 1,000 metres. Temperature 15 deg.

AWACS not available.
