1. I just can't beleive it how some people are quick to abandon their freedom just in order to obtain something they strive for. Read Faust please.

So if I sum up guys here are willing to accept the limited activations eventhough they have no guarantee that it will be "easy" for them to obtain more activations after that. And what then ? What if they change their staff and you have rocket scientist who will find you guilty before you can prove otherwise ? By that I meant he purly and simply stops issuing of new activations ? Will you buy BS again or will you wait for another release ?

What is at stake here is not so much BS CP but the CP of future titles from ED. Today they will test if you accept the concept of limited activations on the DVD version, if you bend over and just say shove it for BS well then you can be sure that they will use same CP strategy for other titles. At the end the ED will become EA's russian counterpart as far as CP are concerned. And do you know the best ? Only the loyal and honnest customers will be concerned with this hassle not pirates.

FC DVD CP should enough to protect the game.

  2. Hello,

I was looking forward to buy Black Shark even though I'm not a helicopter fan. Nevertheless I wanted to support the ED by buying their product and supporting them as the only company on the market still producing combat flight sims along with Lead Poursuite and fighter ops. I have Flanker 2.0, Lockon and Flaming Cliffs legally bought. Yet when I read the open letter addressed to the community by ED I must say that I was in shock.

Their decision to implement online activation system despite the fact that we have the DVD is a buy stopper for me. I want to be able to play the software 10 years later no matter what.

For those who say that in 10 years you will not use it well reconsider your opinion please. I have Falcon 4.0 and Jane's F/A-18. I still play them yet software companies who made the soft are not any more.

And BTW why do we have to be punished because of handful people ?

    So to sum up.

Should the ED maintain their policy for activation need despite having the DVD and having agreed to install level 0 driver on my system they can count for sure minus one sale.

    Cheers

  3. 1. The MIG pilot(s) underestimated the available time they had before going defensive (and its odd that their personal accounts do not mention any counter measures) 2. Do to poor training the "safety envelope" was stretched forcing 'Wild Bill' and the F117 pilot to engage.

Had the comms been better the F15's could have F-Pole'd the MIG and gave him the opportunity to retreat rather pressing (anyone know if that mig was packing '77's?). In most cases a show of force and an offcenter path adjustment is sufficient to send a lone pilot back for reinforcements. Additionally, had the 'First Blood' not been drawn (even if it was Hydraulic Fluid ) it may have averted the pop up that the F117 had to take out.

I'm glad the pilots lived to tell the stories
1. Counter measure launchers were not delivered with Mig-29A. The resaon Yougoslavia got that plane was the debt payment of the URSSS. Moreover the Mig-29A was used as a model for the first Yougoslavian supersonic fighter which was never built due to the civil war. All Mig-21 and 29 were planed to be replaced with L-18 (the official designation of new supersonic fighter).

Only one squadron was equiped with Mig-29A in entire Yougoslavia.

    2. There is something you don't take into account here. Human psychology and the culture. In Yougoslavia it's the bigest shame to retreat before the ennemy or to say that you put your tail between your legs and turned away without even figthing.

"Cowards" are not very well seen there even if that means certain death for the person who is involved.

I think that this will explain you much better why Migs were scrambled eventhough all odds were against them where as during Desert Storm Iraq has sent his planes to Iran. Even during WW2 active combat against Germans was going on while in the rest of occupied Europe they were waiting for liberation.

But all this is off topic so I'll not continue on this matter any more. Sorry GGTharos.

  4. Hi all.

Now when I read this I first think it takes technology from the AIM-54 Phoenix. The problem there is that the Phoenix was not very effective for engaging fighters. Later in the article it mentions using RAMJET. I mention this for the following reasons.

We are discussing this in the context of a "perfect A2A missile". It will be fast, have active radar for accuracy, and be small enough so that it can be used on many platforms.

The problems. I am not sure of missile sizes, but the AIM-54 is probably the largest A2A missile in service, correct? The F-14 is probably the largest fighter in service, correct? Now they are going to add RAMJET tech to something like that? IIRC, NASA tested a RAMJET last year. IIRC that thing was strapped to the wing of a B-52.

So how can a missile that holds all that capability, engineneered down to a size of what, say the size of a AIM-7, be cost effective? How much did an AIM-54 cost? How much will the system that launches that thing cost? Now mutiply that by what, say 6-8 of those babies to the jet that can use them. Orao is right, they are going to want that missile inside the F-22. I have no idea what a F-22 cost, but if it gets shot down or crashes(which does/will happen) you can just watch you national dept shoot through the roof.

I agree with B_R_D & Pilotasso. There is probably a limit to A2A missiles. You may be able to improve on a current system, like they did for the AIM-9x. Will there ever be the perfect missile?

Maybe it's time to start arming jets with LASERS. :icon_roll . You won't be able to spoof it. All you will need is positive ID from an AWACS/JSTAR.

    -KILSEK

Meteror is designed to fit on Eurofighter and Rafale. Rafale is a small plane compared to other planes so I don't think that in size Meteor will be as big as AIM-54. It would be rather comparable to the size of the AMRAAM.

Don't forget that AIM-54 was developed in 70 and the electronics inside are huge. With today modern technology electronics will take less place inside the missile. Therefor more place will be offered to the fuel and to the warhead.

Moreover ramjet dosen't have boosters so more place is gained.

For guys who want to know the basics of ramjet propulsion here is the link :

    http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/ramth.html

    P.S.

AIM-54 was built only for one thing. Destruction of Soviet bombers which would attack the fleet. Phoenix missiles were not built for high manoeuvering targets such as fighters.

  5. Taken from this site : http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/europe/bvraam.htm on Meteor and no, the US have no such missile yet in its arsenal but I think that something similar will be either bought or developped for F-22.

A single fighter, equipped with an operational load of BVRAAM missiles, has the potential to destroy even the most maneuvrable of fighters well before they reach combat range, and simultaneously engage bombers at long range. Targets are prioritised prior to launch, and the missiles are fired towards the predicted interception points. Meanwhile target information can be updated, via the data-link, throughout the initial flight - either from the launch aircraft or from a third party such as AWACs. Tactical information on the missile can also be received by the controlling aircraft. At the appropriate time, BVRAAM’s active radar seeker autonomously searches for and locks onto the target. The missile is now fully autonomous, making its own decisions to home in on the target, despite any evasive manoeuvres, or decoys or sophisticated electronic countermeasures.
6. Hi again,

Concerning the datalink. It's encrypted numerical signal (+5V 0V) and tehre is no way that the RWR could know that the missile is for its plane before Aim-120 goes active.

Just to recall something here. A RWR is made out of an antenna network set over the plane. Those antennas are receiving the radio signal and onboard computer is interpreting the received signal.

Now cocnernig datalink being taken over by AWACS. Such missile exists allready and is called METEOR. New european advanced BVR missile. It's made for use on Eurofighter and on Rafale. Once the missile is launched the datalink is sent by either the attacking plane or by the AWACS.

    As for D-Scythe

Sorry dude but the point of this topic wasn't if the R-27 is better than AIM-120 but do we get in RL a RWR signal when the missile is launched in TWS mode.

Mig-29A is a crapy plane we all know that. It's a F-16 in its early version Block 32.

On my last point I tryed to get an idea about real efficiency of Aim-120. All we know is that Migs got downed by Aim-120. Ok fine, but how many kills for how many launches on manoeuvering target. In other words what was the kill/launch ratio ?

So chill it out will yea ?

    Thx.

  7. A lto of peopel seem to think that Serbian MiGs could have evaded AMRAAMs easily if they had funcitoning RWRs ... well,a ccoridng to this .... :

    From here:

    http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/archive/index.php?t-6123.html

Yugoslav pilot testimony that they were shot down from their interviews with the Yugoslav media:

    24th March 1999.

    Lieutenant Pilot Milorad Milutinovic

"...despite having indication that I was illuminated, and that a missile was speeding to me, not wasting a second, I fired a missile on the closest aggressor plane. I tried to avoid the missile with a sharp turn, taking forces the likes of which I have never felt before. Only a few seconds later a powerful explosion shook my plane.

I radioed that the plane was hit and that I'll do anything to save it. however, the stick wasn't responding. I tried it a few times, but all was in vain. The aircraft fell toward the earth at great speed. There was nothing else to do but to pull the eject handle."

    Lieutenant colonel Dragan Ilic

(TJ note: Ilic's MiG-29 was hit by an AMRAAM but managed to land his damaged aircraft on an airfield.)

"I had the signal that I was locked on by an enemy missile. A fireball pushed the plane and the aircraft shook. The cockpit glazing cracked and fogged. I didn't feel any changes in engine performance and I was thinking how to save the plane. I pointed the plane to my home airfield at low speed, around Mach 0,5. All would have been different if the cracked glazing failed, I would have to had to eject and sacrifice the Mig."

    Lieutenant Colonel Iljo Arizanov

"-Then a missile hit me in the rear part of the plane that threw itself to the left and spiraled to the ground. I could not control the plane anymore. I saw in my rear-view mirror that a fire erupted. I ejected. When the parachute opened, I heard the plane above me."

    Major Pilot Nebojsa Nikolic

"he avoided the first missile with a skilled maneuver, but a whole fiery cloud of them streamed towards his Mig. he was hit once, twice, three times. Soon his cockpit was full of smoke....

In a haze he maneuvered, although he was losing altitude. His view clouded in the smoke. His controls served him a little while longer. He deserved this little luck meant for the brave. Then he listened to his instinct and pulled the eject handle."

TJ note: Nikolic's MiG-29 wreck photographs can be seen on Venik's site. The aircraft came down in Vojvodina. Venik has on his site that the aircraft was downed by the Dutch F-16. This is in error. The Dutch F-16 pilot downed his MiG-29 in the Kosovo region. The serial of the MiG-29 was 18111.

USAF pilot eye-witness acounts of the action on 24th March 1999:

Lt. Colonel Rodriguez, F-15C pilot, USAF- on the events of 24th March stated:

"We located a MiG-29 that was coming out of the Pristina airspace. There was some confusion between the controllers and our formation. The confusion arose from not having trained together and from a slight language barrier. I handed him (MiG-29) off to my wingman who a very young - his very first

combat mission - who goes by the name of 'Wild Bill'. I've got the MiG on my radarscope and we take the shot. We couldn't see very far because we're not equipped with night vision equipment, but when the MiG-29 exploded the large orange fireball erupted and illuminates the western mountains, lighting up the sky. The first blood had been drawn on night one!"

Details from Capt. Shower's interview on the events of 24th March:

"Capt. Mike Shower, flying an F-15C, was escorting the first of two strike packages - one package flew into southern Serbia while Shower's package went north over Belgrade. The strike packages were made up of 10 F-117s and two B-2 bombers with escort coming from a total of eight F-15Cs and F-16CJs. Approximately four minutes into the mission, Shower said they heard a "Splash one MiG-29" (a MiG-29 has been shot down) call from Airborne Warning and Control System from the south strike package. We got a little excited at that point since there was no doubt the Serbians were going to launch their aircraft. Six minutes into the mission, the Captain's radar picture was complicated by an unidentified aircraft taking off from Batajinica Airfield, a MiG-29 base in northern Belgrade.. The Captain said the final shot illuminated his aircraft from the rocket plume so the F-117 pilot could tell the two aircraft were approximately 2,000 feet from each other. The missile

went right across the front of his aircraft down to the MiG-29 which blew up about 7,000 feet underneath the F-117. The MiG-29 crashed within 25 nautical miles of Batajnica Airfield."

    HI there,

Nice text you've found but a very large amount of data is missing.

    1. We don't know the exact tactical situation

    2. What were the launch parameters for AMRAAMs ?

    3. The yugoslavian hardware was jammed with a lot efficiency during conflict. Yugoslavian Air Force had exactly the same Mig-29A as German Air Force. Electronic warfare was one of aspect of that war too.

    4. What pieces of hardware were operational on Migs ? Major drawback of Mig's electronics is a time of functioning after which you need to change parts. Spare parts were legally impossible to have because of UN sanctions.

    5. Finally how many NATO planes engaged a single Mig at same time ?

Even in Lockon if you dodge the first missile you have 80 % of chance to be hit by the second incoming missile.

    Cheers.

  8. AAA in F4 is more WWIIish, the AAA in lockon is more realistic in my view. For a helicopter sim you still need soldiers on the ground. Its impractical not to have them.

Hey SUB check the video footage for Desert Storm and Allied Force. You'll see that the flak is still there eventhough its accuracy is more than null.

As for infantry, well it's too bad that this engin dosen't support skeleton animations. It would have been awsome to have an infantry. But ED didn't think about that in first place when they started the write this engine.

  9. Sorry guys but as it's now Lockon is just technological demostrator. It's good for making movies and play it online (if you can find ppl to fly with you).

The huge map which was so hardly coded is completly useless. I mean it's just like a big schoolyard and you are playing alone against 3 or 4 AI.

Attack missions have no immersion. You can set up air defenses but it will be only limited to the engaged unit or you can say bye bye to the FPS. You feel alone out there. No chatter.

Maybe we don't need necessarly a dynamic campaign but at least give us some decent editor which uses triggers and doesn't allocate system ressources to the AI if the unit isn't on the map.

    Imagine this :

You set up the attack mission. Objective is the enemy fortified position across the river. In case of success armored forward elements of your army will advance to establish the bridge head. If you fail to inflict enough of dammage the armored units will call for CAS and will wait for Apaches or Cobra to reach the zone before launching the attack.

In this editor we can't program any kind of tree. It's all or nothing. Moreover if we want to simulate WW3 and Day 1 such it was described in Tom Clancy's Red Storm we would not have been able to take off because of FPS. Now don't tell me it is because off all eyecandy coz I'm willing to play without if I can have a very high number of units on the map but I can't.

  10. Hi all.

    Edited:

You know, I have hear this just as much as the rest of you and I have to say this. A dynamic campaign is IMO just a little novelty(sorry, maybe I am being a little harsh). IIRC in F4 the briefing gave you all the info you needed(alt you needed to be at, speed, time on target, and what you were looking for) so was there really a surprise(the targets were/are there, so go get 'em) or anymore of a rush than LO/FC provides.

If anything, hearing the other packages comms and wishing you had that one last missile to help, or seeing that your sides armor is taking a beating and wishing you had taken a couple of mavs to perhaps turn the tide, now that had a some more immersion. But can't you do that with LO/FC? I mean everything but the comms? Set up a couple of extra flights or armor columns slugging it out, and the when you're done with your primary goto those areas and see whats up. If you survive your engagement, you maybe able to turn the tide of battle that way, if not...

    -KILSEK

Ok. I wasn't a Falcon driver before the Allied Force was released. So let me tell you a little anecdote which happened to me recently.

Theater was Balkan. I chose mudmovers squadron. My squad was scrambled and the mission was created. A CAS one. We had to take out enemy tanks which were attacking NATO defense lines. We were given target coordinates and we took off. Once we arrived over the target area we saw enemy tanks destroyed. We thought that the mission was over but no.

We were redirected over another target area which was something like 5-10 km northwest out of our position. We moved there and we contacted FAC officer of the unit for active guiding since it was a complete mess down there. He guided us and we hit targets.

So you see what the Lockon lacks is all this live battlefield staff.

The mission is completely dynamic. All info you have before the mission in the briefing is just the intelligence estimation nothing more nothing less.

If Lockon could have this it will be the ultimate combat simulator on the market.

  11. Cncerning the campaign and the mission editor; I read this on ubi forum which was an announce translation from MAKS airshow Simulator stand.

Play aspect, besides control of aircraft and helicopter,is represented by the large number of missions and campaigns, accompanied by the impressive videotapes.
Does this mean that we will never hava a dynmaic campaign ? I mean comme on. You can add as much good stuff as you want but without dynamic campaign it will become soon borning. When you create your own mission you knwo where the threats are and you know where the ennemy is. No spice no sweat, nothing which will give you thrill and which will make you happy if you return to your homebase safe.

I hate to say this but the success of Falcon 4.0 isn't only due to its advanced avionics but also to its Dynamic Campaign. That sim was released on 1999 and it's still in the spot.

So please include the dynamic campaign within next addon.

  12. If you use large bobmers they can carry only dumb bombs. Bombers are designed to level the cities not to perform a pinpoint strike. They are doing carpet bombings an then they move away. Remaining for an extended period of time over the well defended city is a suicide. Then only bobmer which can lunch large pinpoint strikes at my knowledge is a a B-2 flying wing. The USAF did some trials with B-1 but they remained quite unsatisfactory.

  13. Lomac is demanding in CPU departement as well as in video card department. As far as SLI mode is concerend, if you are about to buy a SLI card I strongly suggest you to take a look at new ATI SLI solution known as Crossfire.

    http://www.ati.com/products/crossfire/features.html

ATI solution dosen't require any kind of dedicated script or programing for a particulary game to use the SLI solution.

However this solution will greatly limit your choice of motherboard since crossfire needs a co-processor for SLI. This can be seen as a drawback. But, the main advantage is financial one.

Once you have bought a Crossfire dedicated card and the motherboard with crossfire co-processor you can plug in any card you want going from X800 to X850XT Platinium edition. If you think that you need to change your video card, in order to continue to benefit from SLI solution all you have to do is to change a single card and it will still work in SLI mode afterwards.

    To make it short :

NVIDIA SLI solution = Any motherboard but two identical video cards are needed. The software is needed for SLI to function with particulary game.

ATI SLI solution = Motherboard with crossfire co-processor + crossfire video card. Single video card from X800 to X850 PE will allow you to benefit from SLI solution. You don't need lets say 2 X800. SLI solution works with every single game. No software is needed for SLI to function.

And SLI solution benefits greatly to rendering, but the AI will bring your rig to its knees since the LO engine is tracking every objet in the worldspace even if you can't see it on the portion of the map you are fling over.

I hope that this helps you to make your choice.

  14. Hi developpers.

3DSM7 was released and with it the new tool for game developpers. They implemented Normal Mapping method. Basicly you model a very high poly count model with all pssible details. You then do a low poly model. You use your high poly model to render it to texture.

Then you apply a Normal mapping modifier to your low poly model and you select a previously rendered texture (the high poly rendered to texture).

And here you are with a high amount of details on a very very very low poly model. Normal mapping is casting shadows out of texture. It uses a low poly just like a squeleton.

Here is a free tutorial on what I wrote above :

You only have to make a free subscription to download it.

  15. Hello,

In one of posts your team memeber said this :

[quote name=Give us flight manual and weapons delivery manual at least. There is one of the major problems with such planes as Mirage-2000.

Olgerd]In any case if we want to model complex and close to reality avionics systems, manuals and tech descriptions are highly recommended.
Now Mirage-2000 familiy manuals and detailed technical informations are strictly classified and any civil or military who will make them public risks the prison in France.

However the Mirage F1, the 3D model which is made by knelknel (retired french Mirage F1 pilot) isn't classified.

Here is the link to the Mirage F1CZ fligt and operational manual.

    It's a payable one and it costs 20 $.

    http://www.flight-manuals-on-cd.com/MIRAGE.html

IMHO you can use it to make Mirage F1 flyable by humans not only the AI.

You'll find manuals for F/A-18 A/B/C/D, Harrier as well as F-14 A/D on this site.

    Thank you for reading this.
