Hey silentbob11,
Yeah I have had the same issue with this mission. I have not got past it yet too. I see the main problem is my own F15C wingmen start going after ground targets sometimes (I dont know what weapon they intend to use though as they are only loaded with air-to-air weapons), or they individually go chasing a pair of MIG29/SU27's and either get shot down by an SA10 or SA11 or an opposing Aircraft. Regardless it never ends well for my flight.
The other thing is my flight dont want join up formation when im trying to escape back south for 10nm or so before coming back around for another pass to the north as a flight package again going head-to-head with opposing aircraft as the F15C's seem to be able to get a shot off first most of the time.
Ive even tried loading 8xAIM120C/B on my entire flight (not loading the AIM-9's) and even when im lucky to down 6 other planes, heaps of other Russian attack planes just keep taking-off replenishing their numbers.
I tried to hold back the strike packages for as long as possible to reduce the Russian fighter numbers first but the strike package eventually head towards the target themselves, which is to be expected as they cant wait around all-day. But dont get me started on how useless the strike package is at dogfighting, they just seem fixated on their ground targets and not see the Russian fighters closing in on them. Even if I get shot down I usually watch the (F2 view) and the strike packages seem to want to head to the target at low altitude and just forget about the MIG29/SU27's flanking them every time.
Oh well, maybe this mission was meant to be tough, it sure is, and I shouldnt be too critical as it still a Beta. I wonder if ED will make any changes to this mission for the final release. Apart from the unusal AI, i am absolutely loving FC3 so far. It is nice to fly a fast jet and do purely dogfighting missions (even though it is a SFM). I loved the A10C but it is nice for a change too.
If anyone else has some tips / tricks / advice for this mission I'd be glad to hear it!
