I wouldn't mind if they gave it away for free. The money I paid I feel like they deserved, simple as that. I'd pay it 50 times again.

Yes, I know. What I'm saying is the target is not constantly in the same place when maneuvering, and that is possible for the target to actually be below you, but still on the + only while maneuvering.

I've Tried R-55's their IR missiles, make HUGE explosions, but have a short range.
it's the RS-2US that are also radar guided, and their not as fast, shorter range and don't turn as good as the R-3Rs, but i got my first missile kill in the mig-21 online with a couple of the RS-2US's... before i learned of the r-3r
Not as fast, shorter range and don't turn as well.......is there any reason to take them other than giggles? Bigger warhead?

To be honest I would kill to have an r-73 on the Mig. It has a really good seeker, all aspect, and I believe more range. As much as I love the r3r, if a pilot knows how flimsy the Mig 21 radar is, they can just dive straight to the deck and the radar will lose lock, hence r3r now has gone stupid. I also really like when I have the chance to acquire a target visually, is to turn radar off so they think I went away or are targeting someone else. But if the targrt is head on, or something with a low signature like the a10, I have no choice but to use r3r, and thus alerting them with lock tone.
I did some flying on the 104th yesterday. Flew over to where the enemy a10s were operating, and orbited slowly for 40 mins waiting for someone to start attacking our ground units. Found a a10, and took him down with 2 r3rs. I then went to turn around to head home cause I was low on gas, when I saw another a10 on radar. Locked him, but he was straight head on, my r60m wouldn't lock on, we passed both firing guns at each other and missed. Then I went to go distance myself and re attack sonce I know I can't turn with an a10 and I need to be behind him. But apparently he pulled so many g's he snapped his wing off by himself lol. Then i went home.
I know video would be better but I don't record as of yet.
Well theres a 20 year difference between the missiles. Of course the R-73 is a better missile(of the IR variety), I can concede that, but what I mean is I prefer the radar guided missiles over IR missiles in the 21. They're growing on me :P
Also, you have to keep in mind that the MiG 21 has an upward scanning radar that is already quite limited in the first place.
Those a-10c have a pretty nasty bite too lol if you give them the opportunity they'll take it. If Ralfidude was in that a-10c for example, i'll be damned if I go in for a frontal guns kill f that. From what I found, I could only lock the a-10 at <2km, and if you launch it after that you're pretty much setting yourself up to waste a missile. Plus, those r-60m go for flares pretty readily, so if your opponent sees the launch you're pretty much going to miss him in an a-10. I've had more success with fighters in AFB, but at the end of the day not as good as R-3r hands down.
If you want to put a replay I wouldn't mind watching it.
that's why, in the mig-21, you stay on the deck, hide yourself with hills, so if someone tries to avoid your radar lock by diving, the ground is in the way... and even using r-3rs you need a visual on the target, cause he can just turn out of your lock even on the deck, you get the lock, then put the target on the + on the radar, then look at the top x on the gunsight, should be right there... you don't absolultly have to put him right directly on your nose, can get used to wherever he is, but simplest.from my point of view, modern fighter pilots are mostly lazy and go for long-range attacks, or rely too much on the sensors and forget that just because someone's turned off their radar or hid behind a hill doesn't mean they've just disappeared entirely... and never expect someone to magically pop up 10km away in-front and underneath them... that surprise quite often gives more than enough time to smoke them with a couple r-3rs
all my posts in this whole thread, from my first post to here, are about ambush tactics... including everything i've said in this post. plus some other stuff....
the only way you'd be above someone or co-alt with them is if you weren't ambushing them.
if they've matched you(you meet on a peak for example), and their missiles have a longer range than you, and their prepared for you, then you die... if you don't escape...

Hard to tell where the + on the radar really is with a hard maneuvering target for me. Radar can detect target below you with the T symbol and it can still be near the + on the radar. Maybe I'm mistaken. Hope that made sense I'm not very good at explaining things. Best to get visual of the fighter.
Now when an F-15 and Su-27 use ambush tactics and AWACS, that is a scary site.

I was able to take out an F-15C and a Su-27 on 104. This is beginning to feel almost too easy. Love this bird so much.
They didn't maneuver very much. Wish they had put up more of a fight. Both missiles hit at 5km+ though
I tried to use the angler fish as a metaphor, it uses roughly the same tactics... just it's prey are smaller than it usually...whack-a-mole (if he doesn't kill you first) is a much better metaphor for sure.

Great thread. Its motivated me to start taking some R3-R instead off R60s when I take the mig. Also seems to me the radar is not as bad as I initially thought.I take a pair of R3Rs and a pair of r60s, get most kills with the r3r.I do th same. Pair of r3r and either 2 or 4 r60m. I get most kills with r3r but if i end up in really close, or I'm below them and I want to sneak up on them r60m is bestI was thinking the same thing. The radar was giving me lots of problems when I first started. I guess its best to learn how to work with it. And all I'm taking now are R-3R tbh. Plan to try the other radar guided missiles a bit more but no time soon(having too much fun lol). R-55 specifically( I think they're called)
tbh up to this point I'll take an R-3R over an R-73 anyday lol
...and you would be right...Super right! I almost never play online PvP so I can't reply anything useful, but this thread is so interesting, keep going guys :thumbup:It's even starting to motivate me to give it a try.
I also thought that the R-60M would be the best missile to fight against modern fighters, it seems I was wrong since the radar allows to get a better lock.
My main problem with this ship is that it goes blind as soon as it's locked, I found great hints to solve this here.
Now I must practice ;)

it's like those whack-a-mole games, except, you play as the mole... the thing is... instead of letting yourself get whacked, as soon as the hammer comes down, you blast it to bits...lol thats a very very good metaphor actually

you've almost got it except what you needed to do was get a mountain between you and him, instead, even though he was behind you, you went for the hill infront of you.
That's why he had a constant radar lock on you right up untill that friendly passed between you and him and he switched targets.
remember you need to turn into him, so that the hill you end up hiding behind blocks him from you.
but i think lots of people are reading this, just not replying.
not too many people go out and try to get kills with this thing... online anyway...
I guessed the best thing to do was to just go defensive and dive for the closest mountain. I wasn't expecting him to lock me up, I thought that was just a buddy spike at first. At the time I was purely thinking re-position and ambush
From what I could tell he fired a 120 and brought his attention to my ally. Ally told me I saved his ass because he had his back to him as I fired.
I'll use your advice next flight.
One thing I noticed was I seem to be more focused on the radar than the actual enemy. Need to work on that

the final version.... probably... but computers won't be fast enough for many years (5+), if the dk2 is any indication.
expect to see a lot of extremely light weight, simple things... compared to DCS... for the foreseeable future...
I personally don't get motion sickness in DCS, I do in some games.
The reasons why people get motion sickness from VR are varied and differ from person to person, while i might not get sick in DCS, someone else might, and in other games, while i get sick playing them, that same someone else might not.
anyway, this is kinda not on the same topic as killing modern fighters with the mig-21...

I have an i7 2600k@4.6GHz, 8gb g.skill ram, and a GTX780
I suggest you turn HDR off, all it does is make everything either too blue, or too bright, and makes your youtube movies look hazy, also uses gpu power just to make you feel like your in constant foggy hazy brightness
you can't ID planes with the rift, but it's clear enough to use the radar and iff them, but you'd really need a pair of gtx980s to get decent framerates with it, though if you don't mind getting lows of 20 fps a gtx780 will do, also you need to modify some files to make the text in game green (since green is the highest resolution subpixel on the dk2) and make the fonts bigger.
not worth it to buy a rift just for DCS, not with DCS as the main reason for buying one.
if you want to get a rift to have the whole DK2 experience then it's cool, but not for dcs.
Yes I just turned the HDR off thank you very much. Helped a lot. Came close to killing a su-27 just now, 5km out had him defensive, just launched my second R-3R when a SA-15 site taught me a lesson lol. So disappointed.
Do you figure you will be able to ID planes with the final version? I'd expect they're planning to optimize it a lot more before release. And 20 frames for GTX 780 is mind boggling, so once again I hope they optimize A LOT. Yes I wanted it more for the experience, but DCS is what consumes most of my time so I'd use it on that as well.
Do you get motion sickness from it?

yeah i was thinking about investing in a couple of those cheap saitek switchboards, like this one
the switches wouldn't be in even close to the same places as they are in the real pit, so not really any better than hotas... how the heck do they use the radar and fly at the same time with it on the right side like that? all mig-21 pilots required to be ambidextrous?

$90 not bad. I'm fresh out of USB ports so I'd have to wait for my next hardware update to even think about that.
and tbh I just don't have enough buttons for everything. If you can cram it all into your HOTAS I would. Problem is if I do it I'll leave some pieces out, so I may as well leave some of the less essential stuff off my stick and just click it. I know I need to map the 3 jammer buttons onto my stick, though.
What GPU you running anyway?

I have HOTAS(CH Fighterstick, CH Pro Throttle, CH Pro Pedals), I just haven't thought of the way I want to map all of the weapons controls yet. I prefer to keep the HOTAS to what the pilots would use, but you're right, I'm not in an actual cockpit so I can't just click something. However, I was thinking to map them to the keyboard instead, a quick little hot key. Either that or get a switchboard.
Also, I wanted to ask if you like Oculus Rift. I am going to pick up the finished product once it comes around. Can you dogfight with it?

I don't mind somewhat flat women, but when it comes to staying alive in the mig-21, flying over flat land is like continuously launching fireworks that can be seen from 150km away... i only do it when I'm using myself as bait, so that's why i find that position scary.
anyway, good kill, better than mine was... first missile loses radar, 2nd dumb fires, end up having to use my guns cause i can't figure out the R-60Ms....
I didn't even notice it while I was flying. Think I would have been a lot less disoriented if I had used it. Apparently its some sort of constant awacs picture that some missions use. This was on 159.
And yeah lol I was out in the open with no mountains in sight, felt a little ballsy with an F-15 behind me I guess. Either that or my flight planner was trying to kill me :megalol:
I wish my first fighter kill would have been a guns kill, that's a whole lot more impressive than blindly firing missiles like I. I grabbed my mouse so quick when I fired that last missile cause I was sure it was going to miss lol
But yes, I made it back to my home plate safely.

so I've started these from when i first engage the enemy, and they stop right after i kill it.
keep a close eye on my rwr right at the beginning of the video, he's the one I'm hunting, i dived down to take cover behind that hill, hoping he'd zoom towards me right into my missiles, and he did....
as for the 2nd one... pretty self explanatory
both kills are F-15s.
Finally had my first fighter kill on 159 just now. Is there anyway to view the replay? There were 2 F-15s, and me with a friendly F-15. He fired an AIM-120 at me, from probably about 8nm, I went defensive and my F-15 got into a dogfight with his buddy, I turned back on the target as my F-15 splashed the other F-15. So I went into AFB to follow the other F-15 who thought he could escape me(lol), fired a couple R-3R to make him go defensive(didn't work, he ended up killing 2 of my allies), and fired my last missile in range. I was scared I was going to lose lock so I didn't use my first missiles effectively, so only my last missile I was sure of, though not really. It was a miracle that it hit. But it was fun. Very satisfying. so much adrenaline :joystick::joystick:
Classic MiG-21 ambush...was this against PvP or AI?PVP. Ikr, he's pretty amazing.

I see what you mean but I still can't seem to get a fighter kill whatsoever lol. Theres always something. Can still get a-10's :D.
I think it would help a lot, though, if I set it up to where I can actually use the AWACS. Haven't been able to sneak up on any fighters, and when i bait them with my radar off(which I tried today) it seems like its a good way to go about it, but I was unable to get a kill from it(circumstances), though the strategy saved my hide several times.
Maybe I could get one of your replays?

reason being, by the time you get in missile range against an su-27 or f-15, you're already way WAY W A Y in range of their missiles, so you need to get a lock, get a missile off, and stay locked long enough for the missile to hit hopefully before their missiles reach you.
only after you've mastered using the radar and getting missiles off, not just when the radar says it'll hit, but from the REAL maximum range of the missile, then you should worry about how to get in missile range in the first place.
Maximum range is what, 4km? 3km effective? Generally just wait a second before launch and you'll be right on target.
I'll take 2 R-3Rs or wing tanks (depending on the distance) 4 R-60Ms and an 800L center tank when im going against A-10s and such...
hope some of this helps...
R-60M for a-10c? why? they have a pretty low heat signature, I can't even lock them until they're out of the missiles effective range.

Got an Su-27, I think TrackIR/FaceTrackNoIR would make life a lot easier though.
I didn't like FaceTrack, but you could try it. Expect to spend a lot of time configuring it, though, I guess you do that with TrackIR too.
mig-21 is more stable then su-27 now.Stable perhaps. But the avionics are all in favour of the sukhoi.
In the 104th I have killed 2 F15s, and 1 A10C.In the S77th, I have killed an Su-25t, and an Su-27.
I don't fly the Mig a ton in the A/A in multiplayer. But I have been shot down plenty of times for those few kills.
Did you shoot most of them down from behind?

Anyone had any luck against the modern fighters yet?
Closest I came was on 104, spotted an F-15 spike, pulled up behind him. Had him on my radar about 5km out, probably should have turned off my radar. I get 1km closer, it seems that he spots me and begins to bank, I launch my 2 R-60M out of effective range in my attempt, he flares and defeats 'em, now maneuvering too hard for me to lock him on the radar, I dive down back into the mountains and run away. 9 times out of 10 I get an AIM-120C to the face.
So what luck have you guys had so far?
