  1. So I guess this means, if one desired to replicate the true Vietnam era Huey experience (for whatever reason) turning off the governor and manually controlling the throttle would do the trick as far as flight characteristics go :)
  2. Oh thats right, the govener! Forgot about that - explains it. Thanks!
  3. This is a great mission! I have found that using the cargo camera can sometimes be helpful for staying on top of those fleeing vehicles. :) Does that plane ever take off? I don't think I have ever seen it budge from the end of the runway. The only thing that I think could make this better is a little more traffic in the air.
  4. So I just got done reading Chickenhawk and I noticed more than once it was mentioned how important it is to adjust the throttle whenever changing the collective. However in game it doesn't seem to matter - at startup just ramp it to 100% and leave it there. Is there an aspect I am missing in that I should also learn to adjust throttle along with collective, or is this not modeled in game? Everything I have read and seen so far just has it at 100% and never touched so I am curious about this aspect.
  5. I see this a lot, that Pilot ICS and pilot radio trigger should be easilly available but am not clear on how they are different than just hitting \ Further confusing is that I read one of these (I forget which) is used on the real thing to communicate with the internal crew, which as far as I know does not have any practical use in game. Or does it? Appreciate any info on this one, as I am constantly baffled at the options I see when it comes to radios (especially when I have the Transmit -Interphone selector switch on 3, hit \ then radio a tower and watch the selector move on its own to 2 for some reason)
  6. So now that I am getting more time flying I am noticing that I dont get the full use of my throttle (CH Pro Throttle). The collective picks up at around the 25% mark, then I have about another 25% until I have to pull it back. So it seems there is a large part of it that is not usable to me - is there a way to adjust that? As sensitive as it is, it makes sense that if there was a longer throw I would be able to fine tune it better, as it is now while I am in flight just barely touching it takes me from -500/fps to +500 fps. The movement required for that change is barely perceptible, even looking at the control window in the upper left. I have saturation at about 75 and have been experimenting with curves but I really don't understand what those parameters do. Well sort of, saturation I see shows me the front and back end of the collective, at first I could not figure out why as soon as I start a mission I would launch into space, it was because even with my throttle all the way back it was sitting at about 20%. But that seems all I can do with that particular setting.
  7. Good info, thanks everyone.
  8. I finallly did it...cold start, off to rescue the grunts and landed safely. Seems a minor thing but extremely rewarding. What an awesome challenge this bird is! Anyway, some of the radio calls confuse me. I recognize bullseye from my falcon days, but see no way to find my owm position relative to bullseye, is there a way or are the calls I see just cosmetic? Also, when reauesting azimuth I see something like this: Your current heading 302 for 15 How is that interpreted? And what is Qfe?
  9. Thanks for the info, I have been spending time training on my own so didnt go back to this yet, will look into it for reference.
  10. Do what now? I think these are mostly broken, have issues with the weaponry one too - when I am supposed to switch to the gunner position 3 it just flashes. Meh.
  11. I cant get past the cold start mission, when it instructs me to make sure the throttle is all the way down (PAGE DOWN) it wont continue. Tried several times and it always just stops at that point.
  12. I finally got the mouse axis working! So that's good news, although I don't understand why moving the axis doesn't populate like it should - but at least I can finally fly this thing. Well, attempt to anyway :pilotfly: Thanks for the tips and assistance guys!
  13. Ok I decided to start clean because this is really bugging me. :) I uninstalled CH Control Manager, unplugged the devices, rebooted and made sure everything is gone. For good measure I rebooted again, checked device manager and game controller, no trace of anything. Moved the stick and throttle to different USB ports, Windows found them and it looks good. So far I do not have control manager installed. Removed the config directory and fired up DCS. Cleared all of the Axis categories then picked each axis. The Fighterstick will populate when I move it so good there. The throttle will not - if I choose the column CH Pro Throttle, double click collective it brings up the dialog but will not respond to any movement of the throttle. The only way I can get it to work is to manually put in joy_z. Still not able to do anything with the mouse on the throttle, but all of the buttons on both devices are being seen in game. Am wondering if I should just leave CH Control Manager off? I would really like to be able to assign a button to center Track IR but I am not sure how to do that unless there is an option in DCS somewhere. I really, really would like to be able to use the mouse for rudder like I do on all the other sims that I have.
  14. Yes, I am using Control Manager with a profile in mapped mode. I also tried with no profile in direct mode and without Control Manager running. The game behavior is the same in all cases. Yes, the axis of both devices are moving in CH manager. In fact all of my other profiles work fine in the other sims. Huey is the only one giving me issues. Or maybe it is DCS, I am not real clear on that.
  15. Thanks guys, I cleared the categories and went to start over. After I double click on an axis it opens the dialog but neither the throttle nor the stick being moved around does anything. I tried all three columns with each one but nothing ever registers. My only option is the drop down Key/Button for Joy_x, Joy_y or joy_z Something seems really hosed up here. :/
  16. I just noticed there is a seperate forum for the Huey, I didnt see that. Can this be moved over there by a mod? Also, I found this in the quick start guide: If you encounter a problem, particularly with controls, we suggest you back up and then delete your Saved Games\User Name\DCS\Config folder, EDIT: I found this folder and removed it as suggested, it recreated the config the same way - so I still see three columns, two called CH Control Manager and one called Virtual HID device. No idea what any of them are, or why it lists some axis that I dont even have, like rz_slider (There is no slider on either of these devices)
  17. HI all, I recently got Huey to add to my DCS collection and am having nothing but problems trying to get my CH Fighterstick and Pro Throttle working. It works fine for other games like Il-2, Falcon and Cliffs of Dover so I am convinced there are no issues with the hardware or CH Control Manager. I am seeing a lot of weirdness and am not sure if the game is seeing it properly - is there anything I need to do within DCS to make it behave? Here is what I see: Under Axis commands I have set the Throttle as I would like it, to work as a real collective with forward being down and backward being up. But if I try to fly it reverses it and shoots all the way up so I cant even take off because I get launched into orbit as soon as I click "fly". Also it seems like the game is not recognizing the mouse on the throttle - well it sort of does. I want it assigned to rudder since I do not have pedals and I do this in the other games. I only have 3 axis to choose from. Joy_x, Jo_y and joy_z. If I set the rudder to joy_x and fine tune it I can see it being controlled by the mouse on the throttle. Yet in game the mouse actually controls the cyclic. So does the Fighter stick. I see three columns under Axis controls: CH Control Manager CH Control Manager Virtual HID device What exactly does that mean? I dont really understand the way DCS presents the controls to me, it's nothing like any of the other sims I have played. I have tried without any profile loaded in CH Manager, downloaded a profile that works fine in Control Manager but most of the keys dont work in game. What does the button "Axis Assign" do? I click it and nothing happens. Getting frustrated here but hoping I am missing something simple
  18. RE: using datalink This is exactly what I am talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao19ZthmUGE Around the 5 minute mark he sends his wingman out who IDs some targets. The targets show up on his ABRIS after the wingman sends the information over (implying that he has it, otherwise how could he transmit it?). Yet he still says you have to manually lock up the target and tell them to attack it - Is there no way to just order them to attack the thing they just locked up themselves?!
  19. I use Freetrack and it works great. For viewing that is, when I use it for the HMS it is so flipping sensitive and fast that I don't even bother with it other than getting the reticle to a relative position, then fine tuning with the keys. In other words, when using Freetrack for my viewpoint it is smooth, I have to turn my head quite a bit to look behind me. I like it that way. But with the HMS active if I so much as twitch or wrinkle my nose it's on the other side of the screen - is there a way to adjust just the HMS sensitivity?
  20. Been watching this and I wish my SHKVAL was that smooth - I don't see the HMS so am curious how he is able to move it so quickly and smoothly with the keys? Mine pans very slowly with keys and so fast with the HMS that it is not usable other than to get it into the relative vicinity so I can slowly pan with the keys.
  21. What is this? I don't recall seeing that term anywhere in my training.
  22. Wow, lots of info here thanks everyone! A few spcifics: I may need to spend more time with the ABRIS, I recall seeing things like this in training but have not used it yet. When entering a hostile area: What is CA? I have actually done your missions and have noticed something odd; the datalink commands work great in those. But whenever I play a mission or campaign, my wingmen always seem to tell me "unable" when I order them to engage my target. Another baffling thing to me is, if I send a wingman out to recon and he designates a target, why am I finding it so difficult to determine how to say "Oh you found something? Well don't just stand there, attack the damn thing!!!" For some reason that course of action evades me - is it possible?
  23. So I am finally at the point that I can start this bird cold, get in the air, find my way around and land. On to bigger and better things, mainly - blowing stuff up! :pilotfly: I have the weapon systems down, having done the shooting range so many times I could probably do it in my sleep. That's childs play. But anything other than that is a disaster - have been trying to do the Death Valley mission and I honestly have NO freaking Idea what I should be shooting at. Makes sense that the armor on the ground that is facing the same direction as me is likely friendly, right? So I put that to the test by locking one up and commanding a wingman to attack it. He understandably says "Unable". Cool, built in Friend or Foe indicator in the omnioptent wingman. But then it gets goofy - I keep looking around and see armor facing me, just sitting there. AHA! That must be the enemy! Lock it up, order to engage - "Unable". Uh. Ok, Presumably there is something out here for me to shoot at becau - oh crap I hear bullets bouncing off the side WARNING UNDER ATTACK lights flashing and beeps and boops everywhere, going down. Any tips on 1) Identifying what the hell I am supposed to blow up 2) Other than mashing counter measures, avoiding getting blown out of the sky in two seconds after 15 minutes of boredom? I find it utterly fascinating that this thing was successful at all not having any sort of radar or IFF system.
  24. What the heck are flash stripes? I currently use LEDs on my Freetrack setup and would like to get away from the batteries and aforementioned narrow angle problem.
