  1. Edit, aka PS:

I would like to close the slightly frustrated above post with the following comment:

If there is a modder or 3rd party gent willing to give this cockpit some extra love with minor 3D adjustments I am willing to fully support with all the references I can come up with and maybe help with some extra on top in form of a minor front glass texture mod. Did the same for a Sabre pit in IL-2 and do not know why it should not be possible here.

I think I will buy this segment as it's simply my favourite jet next to 2 Mach 1-2 capable jets.

    Cheers

    Tom

(That might easily be my last Sabre post anywhere lol .. )

  2. :music_whistling:

    Hi chaps,

after an extended break from sim forums (former IL-2 modder/forum admin etc.) I decided to come back to simming as more or less very silent member.

The F-86, along the P-51 and F-5 family and the 104s is my favourite object of desire.

Been such a nerd, must have watched literally every video on the Sabre I could get a more or less thorough search result on the YouTube Google arena.

What I totally like about DCS Sabre videos is the outside 3D smoothness and the FM as far as I watched videos, not yet dived into fast speed videos.

What all the years prevented me was the pit. Frankly, even with the front armor glass fix available, I do not like it at all.

What IMHO is fully wrong is the canopy frame aspect and proportion, too wide in relation to height, too thick in comparison to the front panel and well...the front armor glass, speaking about later Sabre models from E onwards incl. Canadair Sabres and Avons...is wrong.

This is what I had hoped for...I'm a aware there is already a plethora of related shots, videos, threads with similar topic content here..

Made myself a modded IL-2 F-86 pit mod as well, but for obvious reasons and since I can't code or model 3D for cookies...won't help me here lol.

So, in closing the request /topic and annyoance...I would like to ask if the pit might one day sooner or later get a revisit in the 3D shape area, rest seems well...except the mirror, same as above, wrong ratio and rest is cool..

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers

  3. Will be it avalaible discounted until july?

I don't like the look of the F5 (too mig-ish) but it must be awesome to fly

Sorry, but that I have to comment since the F-5E is the only reason atm I may come back to DCS when the full bird is released:

The F-5 does not look at all like a Mig-21.

In fact, I liked to fly the Mig-21 in another sim, especially loved the cockpit, but never got really over its ugly outside.:megalol:

Except for PF and F versions.

Carry on gents, see you at a later point. F-5A/B/Es//T-38s are my favoruite jets along with the F-104C/G/S.

    Cheers

  4. To revive an old thread: IMHO, what is also more needed is a remesh of the front canopy section and windshield.

This very old and slightly edited shot of one of 3 modded IL-2 Sabres IMHO-despite its age, shows exactly what the DCS mode lacks, despite that the DCS looks in general rule wayy more:

Center tint, stronger windshield front etc...rest in this shot, yep, not perfect but quite nice thanks to the original pit.

Pit was by Freedy, mod for center + 3D mesh etc by other artists.

    2014_10_11_at_21_09_04.jpg

In this arcade module, I got 3 F-86 versions, one black, one grey/white with black panels and one early black F-86A style.

Well, just a shot, the FOV/POV is slightly corrupted as in that sim it is mobile and dynamic by (my) choice.

    ...

:megalol: on my attempts to necromonger old threads.

    :) Greetings,

    Ton

  5. As little off topic, the P-38-especially in the Pacific war areas, is one of the most impressive fighters. My favourite Prop aircraft, the "L" and "J" variants.

That plane in a high fidelity environment is a dream as for sounds, class and beauty..in the Pacific, as opposed to the ETO, it was very successfull thanks to its engines rather performing in warm climates. The highest scoring PTO aces flew P-38s.

  6. Cockpit instruments are not what this is about. It doesn’t matter. All pictures are of E and F models and, as expected, the windshield in all of them is identical. In day fighter variants of the Korean War (A, E, F) the windshield was changed only once, from the early V-shaped one.

You mean from the early A model rectangular one to the later bent curved one.

And it is obvious in none of the pictures is a V-shaped windshield. So there is no need to find the correct pictures, they are already correct.

The best way to prove I’m wrong would be to post some pictures that actually look like DCS model ;)

    He is 100% correct.

See also please my post here:

Self quoting that post (lol, self quotes suck  )

    See the pics and comments.

The pics are F-86Fs, Canadair Sabre 4/5/6s..which have the same shape.

Only the "H" model sported a different shap again.

Also the frame to panel ratio and frame thickness is off.

  7. To make a good comparison, you need first to find the proper picture of the real cockpit.

The sabre has been a highly modified aircraft with a lot of different versions and cockpit layouts.

The windshield was even modified and changed from the early versions of the Sabre.

None of the pictures you posted here are the same model as the DCS model.

You can see that some are not even F-86F series some does not even have the same type of instruments.

I do not mean you are wrong, but I suggest you find the correct cockpit piture to compare and extract conclusions

    ..he has the correct picture.:smilewink:

  8. PS:

This is not to spoil anyone's fun. Rather my personal wish, I will mainly fly the P-51D in DCS and atm I am out of the loop ATM anyway.

Yet the front windshield struts e.g. are a trademark Sabre thing and thus cool to have historical. What I find awesome is that the Belsimtek Sabre seems to have the correct mirror position and shape (a first for a released sim/mod) and the bomb markings nicely done.

I wish you good Luck with this. If my posts are in any way offending, I am sorry. Carry on..and if you need more video links, pm me, think I found all cockpit videos I could get on the usual net via YouTube.

    Cheers men

  9. I would like to add one comment which I previously tried to forward via pm and which got no feedback:

The F-86 front cockpit section, as nicely as the cockpit sure is done, has some inconsistency as for the shapes, compared to RL videos and screens I collected over the years:

Check the front windshield shape and thickness and the overall canopy thickness on the frame and compare e.g. to the Belsimtek version.

First best (or worst for the matter) shots I gathered from my resource folder.

The text here was off topic, not for this thread.

Of course the canopy looks different when opened, but even on closed shots it is not that thick as modelled here for usage with DCS.

The front windshield bars on any version look different. On any "F" versions, The shape converges at the top aka makes a slight curve inward with a further shape change on the top. It looks nothing like the Belsimtek version.

I could show 2-6 videos documenting this as for canopy and front screen

Of course these cockpits shown here have been stripped down except the vintage default MK.4 one.

    F versions

And so on..good testament to my point also

  10. mig has very ugly nose design and sabre is even worse. sabre is the one of the worst airplane i have ever seen. additionally i can not say a-10 is a beautiful plane. i think eagle dynamics has a mission about re-making ugliest planes on the earth. :)

    Couldn't agree less. :pilotfly:

Will most prolly skip the F-86s in favour of the Mig-21 here, but the F-86 is definately my favourite jet next to F-104s and F-5s, F-16 and Tomcat.

The Mig-21 IS ugly, but it is also a beast and a marvel.

    Well, taste....everybody has one.:D

  11. Tom73, thank you very much for your help!

The Sabre is also "sort of my hobby" and I can tell you we are trying to recreate the original cockpit as good as possible.

Fair enough.:) Maybe give the front windshield struts a bit more thickness. The preview image looked a bit fish eye proportioned. Then again, it's a WIP and I wish good fun for you chaps.

  12. Sorry if I misunderstood something, but I was replying regarding 'all Sabres in Korea used the slats'. All clear, I agree with what you were saying, and wanted to add that 6-3 winged Sabres have indeed seen action over Korea, and that even older slatted wing Sabres were converted to 6-3s during that conflict.

Not all 6-3 Sabres were F-35s, some were F-25s.

IIIRC later Sabres aka F-86F-40s and Canadair MK6s got the slatted wings again. Provided better low speed handling.:D

  13. Good grief, man. Saturday night was less than 24 hours ago (at least here on the West Coast) and it's now a Sunday. Give the guys a chance.

That was saturday night the other WEEK. Aka the week before. The files were received BTW after I asked. Usually I don't give a s*t about these things, but the Sabre was sort of my hobby from 2010 to late 2013 and I sent the stuff on demand.

    Cheers

  14. No more videos of the f-86?

Could post a sh*tload of videos (popular ones) of F-86s inflight, yet feel a tad disinclined since I basically busted my Saturday evening by digging up old (and some new) F-86 ressources to one of your moderators and did not even receive an answer. :(

I find it remarkable that among all those fan replies no one noted the F-86 cockpit is actually quite a tad mis shaped on the front cockpit ratios.

Well, if that stays this way I happily stay with the arcade Korean era IL-2 Sabre and its (for its sim era) kickass cockpit.

  15. I must say I like being in this LockOn world again for a change.

I mean my system is a total low end thing here nowadays (3 Gigs RAM [lol], HD 5770, Quad 2.85) but even with it I can get nice candy at medium settings and rare chrashes lol ..need a new card anyway and upgrading for my other stuff also next year...so I look forward to Nevada and the new stuff here, hopefully one day an F-86 or full blown Su-27 hehe..;)

  16. Good day gents,

to revive an old thread, can someone by chance point me to a mod which will give the FC 3 Mig-29s, Su-27s and Su-33 the cockpit scratches back?

That would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

    Cheers

    Tom

  17. I just doublechecked, and I get exactly those options on my old XP netbook, and the directions are exact.

Note: you are not meant to right-click the desktop. Right-click the "My computer" icon. If your windows is not in english, it is likely named something else. The icon should be of a desktop computer.

Unless this is SP2 being a ghost again, I do not remember what this stuff looks like on SP2 though it should be the same.

An alternative is to simply search for your boot.ini file with the file search.

Thanks for all the tips. I got it running in the meantime, with medium settings or lower settings flyable and still nice.

This can be a really nice sim, I think when I get a minor upgrade and Win 7 I will have the priviledge of enjoying it fully. Amazing details on the ground and that new Eagle 3D model is just amazing. Same for the cockpit, once I have the hardware to really enjoy it I'd like to post some polite constructive tips in the appropriate thread.

In any case I can say it works with 3GB on XP, hope ot will still run with my interim solution of 4GB Dual Channel RAM next year which is the max on XP..I will stick with XP until I have my new monitor, first I need new GFX card.

    :D

    Cheers

    Tom

  18. Well, I tell you this:

If you can phrase the help for XP in a way which I can relate to (if I click on desktop, properties, advanced, I simply do not get those settings) I might give it a try.

As of now, glad I got support sad I did not know more before.

    Anyway

    Thanks

    Tom

  19. Sorry, but besides that it does not look the way descirbed on my system after the initial "properties" click, I find the need to alter hardware related settings related to the boot process not too pleasing. After all I do not want to harm my perfectly running system and other apps.

I will try it the default way, like mentioned in the offical DCS minimum requirements (no word about extra fixes) and if it works, great, if not..thanks for the support. At least my other specs are above the minimum requirements.:megalol:

    Cheers

    Tom
