..and I thought I was just a really terrible pilot when I tried the gunnery tutorial against the two AI that were constantly outrunning me every time I gave chase. I can shoot one down, but that second one will never slow down enough for me to catch him. So this is because the AI is too good in this game???

hahahah! You are definitely leading me down a road my wife won't be happy about!

Right! will have a look at this tonight! I originally went in to change my throttle behaviour... seemed like I got full power within the first tenth of my throttle . Then I noticed the tune function for deadzones and curves which I applied to rudder and ailerons... this is really helpful, as I'm fairly heavy handed. I'm just using a cheapo Logitech Extreme joystick, which suits me fine now that I've got it all mapped properly. All the trim settings are mapped to my various buttons on the base, so that's really handy!

Thanks a lot guys!! I can't wait to dive in and try each and every suggestion here... and there are some good ones! Really! What a great place! I noticed the aircraft usually does a little shake before it stalls so I've started learning to ease off just at that point and I am thrilled with the results in just one night. I've been playing my cousin one on one, and while we're both n00bs he always seems to have the upper hand. Until last night. I tried applying many of these tips you've shown me and when we ended the evening I had one more kill than he. That felt good. It's exhilarating to be 5 seconds away from certain death and then somehow find a way to reverse the situation and be leading the attack! (That's how we ended.. we both ran out of bullets and limped back to our bases and for the first time, we both managed to land without any further damage.)

I would really appreciate that! I have the basics down... about 20 years ago I was big into Jane's as a jug pilot. Loved that machine because of the height advantage it offered. But I've forgotten a lot of the 'physics' and for instance, I have trouble determining where to turn in order to get the proper position behind my enemy even when I have the advantage. I may come looking for you Duc! :D
-
couple of things then... because thats a little confusing... you say, you keep your turns as fast as possible, but that it's not as tightly and aggressively as you could because you don't want it to overheat. So.. what's the recipe to out turn your opponent? I engage WEP, throw down flaps and use some back pressure in my turn? How much stick to use? edit: Also... man, that's tricky to try to use ailerons and elevators separately! It means you have to use only four positions on your joystick. LOL.
-
Will remember that! Thanks... maybe you can tell me if there's a trade-off between the RPM/prop and the throttle/press.manifold?? Is there ever a time to use them separately? If so, how do you generally treat these ?
-
what's a wing tip stall? Is that what causes me to spin out of control?
-
what's the best tip you can give me to help me turn faster and not lose control. For example, do I use flaps? IF so, is it not possible over a certain speed? What speed should you dogfight? Faster is better? Cmon. Lay em on me!

Screw it. I can't fly this thing.

THAT may have actually been my problem! LOL :music_whistling: -

in the auto start (Windows key + Home) sequence, does it auto trim the rudder?? Or should I manually adjust that afterward? Man, thats some good pointers... can't wait to try again. :smartass: -

WOW! I was in a bad mood last night (hence the "screw it" comment, which as you figured was not indicative of my intentions at all) but this morning seeing all these posts is encouraging... especially because there's good stuff to learn in EACH of your posts! Thanks so much guys! I can already see my error... the stick back on take off. Plus, my wingman (who seemed to be flying circles around me with reckless disabandon and the greatest of ease) was just taxiing at full throttle and told me to give 'er gas and use the rudder only. I'm in no position to dogfight... this beast needs to be broken in ...well, like a mustang! hahah! Again...thanks for the pointers guys! Tell me, what is the normal RPM / manifold press you guys use for level non-combat flight? -
I dunno. I can't even taxi in this plane. it's ALL OVER the place. Controls seem to overcompensate regardless of my level of correction. Even when I get lucky and get 'er up in the air before it wants to flip off the runway I have no real control in the air. I'll maybe play with the control curves but I just thought I'd see if this has ever been more widely experienced here or if I'm just too used to the other DCS modules or relying on my experience with Janes and some of the other oldies.

oh wow...that redownloaded in like... 9 minutes!!! how the!??? thanks!
-
so...start DCS and do it from in there? will it need to redownload again?
-
Hi guys! Can't wait to get this sorted out... I just graduated from my A-10C Warty, but having updated DCS to the newest 1.2.4.5 or whatever, when I try to install P-51 1.2.4 it says that I need a newer installer. Any ideas?

I feel your frustration as well. It sucks when the only way to kill something is to memorize where you finally end up seeing it (usually as you crash beside it) so you can kill it when you restart. It's nice when they give you MGRS points because those are easy to input and zone in on. One thing that really helps is playing on multiplayer servers where you can chat with other players via teamspeak. If you live in North America, you should look for us some evening. Me and two others are regularly playing and we're all n00bs. Server name usually is **** LORD ***** and pass is LORD

I figured it out finally. It was indeed as you say Gryphon... very frustrating and time consuming. No game has ever given me this kind of problem. Usually, I get a Windows pop up asking if such and such a program can access the internet and when I say yes, it knows for the next time. Issue solved. Didn't get any popups with this game. ANd as you say, I had to rely on a friend all the time. SO... my router was allowing me to set up the ports but wasn't saving them when I exited. I finally figured out how to modify an existing profile in the router and changed the port number and that worked. Thanks all. Anyone ever needing help with their Bell 2wire router hit me up. (its a Canada thing)
-
YEah I did... but that didnt work for any of us so we tried the what is my IP as well. :helpsmilie:
-
You mean Windows 7 Firewall? The port forwarding is done in my routers' firewall settings, so that shouldnt be the issue. Disabling antivirus and Windows Firewall didn't help either.
-
I read through ALLLLLL the threads in here about this and to be honest I was disheartened not only by the volume of similar problems but by the lack of anyone helping with the problem. There's a lot of people begging for help to set up a multiplay server that were posted back in 2012 and no one has answered. I did the port forward thing. 10308 on the UDP and TCP slots. Done. still my friends cannot see my server listed. I even googled my IP address and used that IP in the Internet Address line. Still no love. What am I and a lot of other people missing??
-
ok, fair enough. Thanks.

Does the 4 character Call Sign actually do anything? Do friends see your call sign anywhere? It would be nice if you could refer to it rather than the own/group ID numbers. I don't see the point of the Call Sign at all if it isn't reflected anywhere to other players. Scripted sequences and messages should refer to call sign imho.

GOLD!!! Can't wait to try this tonight!

...but will it toggle them ON!? that is the REAL question ;-)
